    9th August–4th October 2019 Openning: 9th August 2019, 6 pm ŁAŹNIA 2 Centre for Contemporary Art, Strajku Dokerów 5, Gdańsk - Nowy Port     Studiolo (from Italian) means a small studio, a study that serves for learning, experiments and research. It gained popularity in the era of the Renaissance, however, it derives from the Middle Ages, when it was termed to define the space for alchemical experiment. In this sense, the studiolo is the origin of a modern laboratory. During "Studiolo. Cosmic gardens" exhibition we will present contemporary studiolo, an experimental space for research and plant growth in an unusual conditions. The research will be grouped into three blocks: first one devoted to biological materials, the second to technologies that allows to form them and use as a growth medium, and the third shows the range of behaviors of plants cultivated in extreme conditions. The Notion of Program in 1960s Art – Concrete, Computer-generated and Conceptual Art | Darko Fritz

Several tendencies in art of the 1960s which at first sight seem completely unrelated and mutually exclusive can be viewed collectively through the notion of “program”. The first discourse on “programs” in art can be found find in concrete / neo-constructivist / luminokinetic art and the like, the second discourse in computer-generated art, and the third in conceptual art. In the 1960s, almost no communication had been established between these three sets of artistic practices and related theories. Very few exhibitions presented these kinds of works together at the time of their production. During the late 1950s and early 1960s, a group of artists began to resist the notion of individual artistic expression in the then-dominant informel and abstract expressionism. Their new approach was for a rational art that appropriated scientific work methods and employed new technologies, materials and methods in its practices. The discourse in art changed: artists became more like researchers or workers; intuitive art processes shifted toward rational, structuralized experiments following a completed program; paintings and sculptures moved toward being objects, multiples and installations, often using light as a material; individual artistic creation shifted toward group work and art groups themselves moved toward interdisciplinary teams

    blackhole-factory

    A group of intermedia artists based in Braunschweig, Germany. Members of the group are Elke Utermoehlen, Martin Slawig and Martin Kroll. blackhole-factory develops performances and installations utilizing the creative tension between information technology and the physical presence of bodies in space, exploring possible methods of augmented space and perception. Generally the projects are using found materials, field recordings, interviews, lo-tech electronics, custom software, sensors and custom interfaces. In their investigative and site specific arts projects the group is exploring aspects of everyday live and identity, focusing on urban space and ethnologic/ anthropologic questions. Some of the works have been created in open processes as participatory art projects. Since 2001 they are directing a group of performers with learning difficulties, creating live art with the use of low-tech electronics and digital media. blackhole-factory cooperates in an international network with artists, scientists and cultural organizations. 2010 they founded an integrative center for theatrical research, rehearsals and performances in Braunschweig called„Theaterhaus Kunstmühle“ www.blackhole-factory.com

    Pier Luigi Capucci

    (b. 1955, Lugo) – is a researcher and theorist in the fields of media studies and of the relationship among art, science and technology. He has published extensively in books and magazines, delivered numerous conference papers and he written the books Reality of the Virtual (1993), The Technological (1994) and Art and Technologies (1996). In 1994 he founded and directed the first Italian online magazine, NetMagazine, later MagNet, on the relationships between the arts and technologies. In 2000 he started Noema, a web magazine on culture-science- technology interrelations. He has participated in international conferences worldwide. He has worked as a teacher at the universities of Rome “La Sapienza”, Bologna, Florence and Urbino, at the SUPSI in Lugano, and at the fine arts academies of Carrara and NABA in Milan. He is currently a professor at the Fine Arts Academy of Urbino and the Director of Studies of the T-Node PhD Research Program of the Planetary Collegium, University of Plymouth (UK).

    Heather Dewey-Hagborg

    (b. 1982, Philadelphia) – is a transdisciplinary artist and educator who is interested in art as research and critical inquiry. Heather has shown work internationally at events and venues including the World Economic Forum, Ars Electronica festival in Linz, the Shenzhen Urbanism and Architecture Biennale, the Mediations Biennale in Poland, the Article Biennial in Norway, the Science Gallery Dublin, Transmediale in Berlin, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art in Germany, and Museum Boijmans, Van Abbemuseum, and MU Art Space in the Netherlands. She has exhibited nationally at PS1 MoMA, the New Museum, Eyebeam, the New York Public Library, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, among many others. Her work has been widely discussed in the media, from the New York Times and the BBC to TED and Wired. She is an Assistant Professor of Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

    Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     Thomas Feuerstein

    (b. 1968, Innsbruck) – studied art history and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck. He works as an artist and author in the fields of fine art and media art. Since 1997 he has held posts as a university lecturer and visiting professor. Thomas Feuerstein’s projects are realised using various media. They comprise installations, drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography, radio plays and netart. Some of the crucial aspects in his work are the interplay between verbal and visual elements, the unearthing of latent connections between fact and fiction, and the interaction between art and science.     Dmitry Galkin

    (b. 1975, Omsk) is a researcher, art theorist and curator. He earned his Ph.D. (‘candidate of science’ degree) from Tomsk State University (2002), and later ‘doctor of science’ degree in 2013. In his research he focuses on cultural dynamics in the context of technological development from digital culture to the culture of artificial life, and analyses the history/aesthetics of technology-based art practices. Dr. Galkin is the author of many articles on the history and theory of digital culture; he has also published a monograph entitled Digital Culture: Shift to Artificial Life (Tomsk University Press, 2013). Dr. Galkin has beena research fellow at the George Washington University (USA) and Lancaster University (UK). He has also lectured and presented at international conferences, including the NeoLife 2015 (Perth), EdCrunch 2015 (Moscow), TEDx Tomsk (2013). He is currently a Professor at the Institute of Art and Culture and the PAST Centre at National Research Tomsk State University (Tomsk, Russia).

    Kirsten Hudson

    Dr Hudson is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University. Her research focuses on the philosophies and histories of the body, informed by gender studies, queer theory and French post-structuralism. This informs an art practice that critically resists and subverts normalising representations, constructions and perceptions of subjectivity, sociality and embodiment. Her current research projects visually and textually explore: 1. the ethical and aesthetic consequences of stem cell technologies on understandings of life, death and personhood; 2, the potential of the art object to articulate ideas, feelings and experiences of melancholy, nostalgia, memory and mourning in a way that actively challenges the limits and understandings of loss and desire is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University.     Ryan Jordan

    An electronic artist conducting experiments in derelict electronics, possession trance, retro-death-telegraphy and hylozoistic neural computation. His work focuses on self-built hardware, signal aesthetics, and the physical/material nature of experience. Jordan’s live performances make excessive use of stroboscopic light, high volume noise, and electronic stimulation of rocks in an attempt to induce hallucinatory and trance like states.     A sociologist, producer, curator and music critic.     Karolina Żyniewicz

    Karolina Żyniewicz is an artist and a researcher. She earned her MA degree at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Strzemiński Academy of Art in Lodz (Poland), and is currently working on her PhD project under the Nature-Culture Programme of the Artes Liberales Faculty, University of Warsaw (Poland). While developing her artistic projects at biological laboratories, she also conducts ethnographic and autoethnographic observations, which help her explore the role of non-human actors, such as liminal beings, biofacts and transgenic organisms, in the production of contemporary culture. She shows her projects both at exhibitions (e.g. Pokusa nieśmiertelności/The Temptation of Immortality at the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw; Uporczywe upodobanie/Pernicious Predilection at the Labyrinth Gallery in Lublin) and at conferences and festivals (e.g. Taboo, Transgresion, Transcendance in Art&Science [Greece, Mexico], FEMeeting [Portugal], and Foro de Estudias Visuales [Mexico]). As an important part of her practices, she writes texts showcasing the performative process of art&science project development (e.g. “Art&science: Autoetnografia artystki realizującej projekty w laboratoriach biologicznych” in Kultura i społeczeństwo; “Ciało w świecie post-natury – byty liminalne. Projekt safe suicide” in Cięcie ciał-ruchome obrazy). In her work, she emphasises the epistemic and didactic dimensions of art. In 2016-2018, she collaborated with the education sections of  the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.     Roger Malina

    An astronomer, with a speciality in space telescopes and observational cosmology.   He is currently a researcher at the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille, and Acting Director for the Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille Provence. His specialty is in space instrumentation; he was the principal investigator for the NASA Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite at the University of California, Berkeley.   For 25 years he has been the Editor of the Art-Science publication Leonardo at MIT Press and an Executive Editor of the Leonardo Book Series at MIT Press.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music. Ignis released records by: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, Chaos As Shelter, EA and Spear.     Martyna Poznańska

    Sound artist and performer. She studied Art of Sound at the University of the Arts, London and took part in the Sound Laboratory by Olga Szwajgier. She participated in numerous workshops led for instance by Meredith Monk. Poznańska is involved in the experimental music movement “Muzykoterapia” [Musictherapy] in Cracow. In her work she concentrates on the possibility of exploring, better consciousness and reduction of the level of noise in urban space. In the year 2012 she published her debut album “Hoarse Whisper”. Martyna’s latest projects include field recording workshops “Łowcy Dźwięków” [Sound Hunters] in Łaźnia Nowa Theatre in Cracow. She recently worked on the soundtrack for the choreography “A Hint of Wasabi” performed by the Adugna Dance Company in Plymouth (UK) in collaboration with composer Jamie Hamilton, made installations for AudioArt festival (Cracow, Poland 2012), Spor Festival (Aarhus, Denmark 2013) and the Jewish Culture Festival in Cracow.     Michal Rataj

    Czech sound artist, musician. He studied musicology at the Charles University in Prague and composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2005. Since 2006 he is assistant professor and runs electroacoustic music theory and composition classes.     Urszula Skiepko

    Urszula Skiepko graduated in Performance Studies from the Jagiellonian University, Cracow (Poland). In recent years, she has worked with new technologies, among others as a QA Specialist in VR & AR projects. Currently, she is collaborating with DataWorkshop on practical applications of machine learning and education in this field. In 2019, she co-organised the DWCC: Machine Learning Conference and curated an ML art exhibition as part of this event. In her leisure moments, she explores the concept of cyborg in science and culture. Her interests include broadly conceived human interactions with new technologies, in particular with VR, AR, AI and BCI.

    Patrick Tresset

    A French artist and scientist who investigates human artistic activity, computational creativity and our relation to machines, in particular our relations with robotic entities. In the context of his art practice, Patrick uses robotics to create autonomous robotics entities that are evocative representations of the artist, and in a certain manner a representation of himself. His robots are based on advanced technologies using research findings from robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Patrick encountered and practiced computing, painting, drawing and sculpture from an early age in France. Following a degree in Business Computing, he migrated to London to become a painter. Between 1991 and 2003 his work was exhibited in solo and group shows in London and Paris. In 2003, Patrick lost his ability to paint and draw, he has since been working on computational and robotic systems that are able to simulate these artistic activities. Patrick’s research led him to join Goldsmiths, University of London, to study for a Master of Sciences in Arts Computing and until 2013, he codirected the AIkon II project with Prof. Frederic Fol Leymarie. The AIkon II project investigated the observational sketching activity through computational modeling and robotics. Patrick also created the creative robotics course taught to postgraduatestudents at Goldsmiths as part of the MFA Computational Arts programme. Patrick was recently a Senior fellow at the Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz in Germany and is a currently a visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London, United Kingdom. As a researcher he has published academic papers in the fields of artificial intelligence, computational aesthetics, computational creativity, social robotics, drawing research, digital arts and computer graphics.     Tanja Visosevic

    An interdisciplinary artist, screen critic/theorist and educator.  Her art projects employ the technologies and strategies of the moving image, performance and bio-art to explore the cultural and philosophical terrains that consume her.  Much of her obsessions deal with the Life and Death Instincts, Identity Politics and the pioneering possibilities, as well as side effects, spawned from New Technologies.   The formation of a revolutionary audiovisual culture via digital technologies is embodied by much of Visosevic’s creative undertakings, present in her interactive mobile phone performances (such as Oh Bon! Commissioned by Fremantle Arts Centre in 2008 for the Bon Scott Project), through to Bio-Kino’s The Living Screen project (researched and developed at SymbioticA – The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts).  These works possess an evolved poetics that situates her art practice within a swelling circuit of new genres and moving-image experiences.  Visosevic is a lecturer for the School of Communications and Arts at Edith Cowan University, where she combines her research in new media platforms with educating students in understanding the nature and experience of the moving image.

    Artist educated in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College in London, with a background in mathematics and chemistry from the University in Oslo. Since 1993 she has worked as an artist, curator and producer. She currently lives and works in Oslo. Jana Winderen researches the hidden depths with the latest technology – her work reveals the complexity and strangeness of the unseen world beneath. The audio topography of the oceans and the depth of ice crevasses is brought to the surface. She is concerned with finding and revealing sounds from hidden sources, both inaudible for the human senses and sounds from places and creatures difficult to access. Recent sound works include “Out of Range” commissioned by Deutschlandradio, Kultur, Germany (2014), “Ultrafield” commissioned by MoMA, The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2013), “Water Signal”, commissioned by The Guggenheim Museum and the Unsound festival in New York for the Stillspotting project, “ultraworld”, a commission by Sound and Music for the listening room at BEOPEN, Trafalgar Square, London (2012), a concert and talk at MIT, Boston, in relation to the Tribute to Commemorate Electro-acoustic pioneer Marianne Amacher; “Survivors of the Waterworld – Measuring Pollution by Sound” for Gøteborg International Biennial for Contemporary Art (2011); “Energy Field” live at ARS Electronica Festival for receiving the Golden Nica in 2011; “Between Dry Land”, commissioned for the installation “The Morning Line” (by Matthew Ritchie) for the Thyssen-Bornemisza Art Contemporary, opened in Istanbul May 2010. “Spawning Ground – from Coquet Head to the North Sea” was also commissioned for the AV festival in Newcastle (2010), and in the same year Jana also opened a permanent sound installation at the Knut Hamsun Centre in Hamarøy, Norway.     Dr Ionat Zurr

    An artist and a researcher at SymbioticA – The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, School of Anatomy and Human Biology, the University of Western Australia. Ionat together with Oron Catts formed the internationally renowned Tissue Culture and Art Project. She has been an artist in residence in the School of Anatomy Physiology and Human Biology since 1996 and was central to the establishment of SymbioticA in 2000. Ionat is considered a pioneer in the field of biological arts and her research been published widely, exhibited internationally and her artwork has been collected by MoMA New York. Ionat is this year recipient of the Discovery Australian Reseach Council Award(2012); she has been a fellow in the InStem Institute, NCBS, Bangalore (2010) and a visiting scholar at The Experimental Art Centre, Stanford University (2007) and The Tissue Engineering & Organ Fabrication Laboratory, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School (2000-2001).
