    9th August–4th October 2019 Openning: 9th August 2019, 6 pm ŁAŹNIA 2 Centre for Contemporary Art, Strajku Dokerów 5, Gdańsk - Nowy Port     Studiolo (from Italian) means a small studio, a study that serves for learning, experiments and research. It gained popularity in the era of the Renaissance, however, it derives from the Middle Ages, when it was termed to define the space for alchemical experiment. In this sense, the studiolo is the origin of a modern laboratory. During "Studiolo. Cosmic gardens" exhibition we will present contemporary studiolo, an experimental space for research and plant growth in an unusual conditions. KW: In many of your works you give up a part of your role in creation which is ascribed to artists. Instead of being a kind of a demiurge, you allow spectators to take a part in the very act of creation. Why do you do it? What is more important for you – to change a traditional status of an artist-creator? Or maybe to prompt people to act? Is the aspect of interactivity of the audience particularly important in your works and if yes – why? CS&LM: In our works we are interested in audience participation as an important factor for the creation of the artwork. In Happenings, Fluxus, Performance Art, Early Electronic Art, Art and Technology (E.A.T.), Expanded Cinema, Actionism as well as in Cybernetic Art, the audience and the participant gained an increasingly important role for the completion of the art event. A new dialogue between the artist, the audience and the art work was negotiated since the 1930s. Starting in the 1970s it was finally possible through interactive technologies, to push this exchange and feedback even further and have the audience contribute their interaction data as important elements in the development of the art work.     Maurice Benayoun (aka MoBen)

    French pioneering new-media artist born in Algeria (1957). He lives and works in Paris.   His works employs various media - including (and often combining) video, virtual reality, the Web, wireless technology, performance, public space large scale art installations and interactive exhibitions.   He is a pioneer new media artist and theorist. As short film director, installation artist, museum and exhibition designer, interaction designer and theorist, during the past 30 years to now, Maurice Benayoun explores the potentiality, the aesthetic and social impact of various media from video to computer graphics, Virtual Reality to Web and wireless art, public space large scale art installations and interactive exhibitions. His work has been widely exhibited all over the world and received numerous international awards and prizes.   He is exhibited in international museums and galleries: Centre Pompidou, Paris, Museum of Contemporary Art (Lyon, Montreal), Kiasma (Helsinki), Eyebeam, Museum of the Moving Image NYC, Streaming Museum NYC, ICC Tokyo… From the Quarxs -one of the very first computer animation series in the early nineties – to NeORIZON giant street installation in Shanghai (2008), not to forget the Tunnel under the Atlantic World Skin, a Photo Safari in the Land of War (Golden Nica, Ars Electronica 1998), or the Mechanics of emotions with Occupy wall Screens in NYC, Benayoun’s work try to exceed technologies by exploring new ways of creating meaning through experiencing metaphoric situations.     Adam Donovan

    He is an Australian artist working in the area of ​​science, art and technology. His work involves robotics, real time 3D environments, camera tracking and sound focusing technology.   Donovan's work has evolved from a fascination with the natural phenomena of light and sound. In pursuing an intense understanding of the physical characteristics of sound and how it moves through space, he has developed an ability to modulate and combine its patterns for us to hear. Essentially, Donovan uses lenses to manipulate, focus and sculpt sound. This fascination with first began using optical lenses to focus light.     Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     John Grzinich

    mixed-media artist, who works since the early 90’ as a freelance artist and cultural coordinator, combining such divergent methods as field recording, kinetic sculpture, electroacoustic composition, performance, spatial perception and acoustics. In recent years Grzinich concentrated on giving workshops on various aspects of sound, that encourage collaboration through social communication, performance, mapping, recording and editing. He performed in North America, Europe and Japan and his compositions have been published by international labels such as: SIRR, Staalplaat, Erewhon, Intransitive, Cut, Elevator Bath, CMR, Orogenetics, Mystery Sea, Invisible Birds and others.     Jens Hauser

    (b. 1969, Schwerte) – is a curator, writer and media theorist. He holds a dual research position at the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies and the Medical Museion at the University of Copenhagen, and is a distinguished affiliated faculty member of the Department of Art, Art History and Design at Michigan State University. His curated exhibitions include L’Art Biotech (Nantes, 2003), Still, Living (Perth, 2007), sk-interfaces (Liverpool, 2008/Luxembourg, 2009), the Article Biennale (Stavanger, 2008), Transbiotics (Riga 2010), Fingerprints... (Berlin, 2011/Munich/ 2012) Synth-ethic (Vienna, 2011), assemble | standard | minimal (Berlin, 2015), SO 3 (Belfort, 2015) and Wetware (Los Angeles, 2016). Hauser serves on international juries for art awards such as Ars Electronica, Transitio or Vida, as well as for several national science foundations.     Paweł Janicki

    creator of audiovisual interactive systems, installations and performances working in the field of media art, microsound aesthetics and algorithmic composition. He is associated with the WRO Center for Media Art, where he currently directs the WRO Laboratory. His musical net-performance Ping Melody was awarded by the Tokyo University Haramachida in 2004 the “netarts.org” Grand Prize, and gained a nomination for the Viper Festival in Basel. He was also co-founder and longtime member of the well-known collective Gameboyzz Orchestra Project, exploring lo-fi aesthetic. These and other projects by Paweł Janicki were presented at many prestigious festivals including the “Ars Electronica” and the “Transmediale” and events devoted to contemporary art in the Centre Pompidou.     Christian Kobi

    Studied music at the University of Music in Basel focusing on the classic saxophone. He also studied in Paris, Lucerne and Zurich. He had numerous appearances at home and abroad, solo and together with various improvised music ensembles. Since 2003 he is the founder and artistic director of “zoom in”, a festival for improvised music at Berne Minster, which he founded in 2004.     Karolina Żyniewicz

    Karolina Żyniewicz is an artist and a researcher. She earned her MA degree at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Strzemiński Academy of Art in Lodz (Poland), and is currently working on her PhD project under the Nature-Culture Programme of the Artes Liberales Faculty, University of Warsaw (Poland). While developing her artistic projects at biological laboratories, she also conducts ethnographic and autoethnographic observations, which help her explore the role of non-human actors, such as liminal beings, biofacts and transgenic organisms, in the production of contemporary culture. She shows her projects both at exhibitions (e.g. Pokusa nieśmiertelności/The Temptation of Immortality at the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw; Uporczywe upodobanie/Pernicious Predilection at the Labyrinth Gallery in Lublin) and at conferences and festivals (e.g. Taboo, Transgresion, Transcendance in Art&Science [Greece, Mexico], FEMeeting [Portugal], and Foro de Estudias Visuales [Mexico]). As an important part of her practices, she writes texts showcasing the performative process of art&science project development (e.g. “Art&science: Autoetnografia artystki realizującej projekty w laboratoriach biologicznych” in Kultura i społeczeństwo; “Ciało w świecie post-natury – byty liminalne. Projekt safe suicide” in Cięcie ciał-ruchome obrazy). In her work, she emphasises the epistemic and didactic dimensions of art.     Film editor. He graduated at the Film and Television Academy in Warsaw. After the graduation he started commercial work (Open Productions since 2006, lazniak.com since 2010).     Roger Malina

    An astronomer, with a speciality in space telescopes and observational cosmology.   He is currently a researcher at the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille, and Acting Director for the Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille Provence. His specialty is in space instrumentation; he was the principal investigator for the NASA Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite at the University of California, Berkeley.   For 25 years he has been the Editor of the Art-Science publication Leonardo at MIT Press and an Executive Editor of the Leonardo Book Series at MIT Press.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music. Ignis released records by: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, Chaos As Shelter, EA and Spear.     Martyna Poznańska

    Sound artist and performer. She studied Art of Sound at the University of the Arts, London and took part in the Sound Laboratory by Olga Szwajgier. She participated in numerous workshops led for instance by Meredith Monk. Poznańska is involved in the experimental music movement “Muzykoterapia” [Musictherapy] in Cracow. In her work she concentrates on the possibility of exploring, better consciousness and reduction of the level of noise in urban space. In the year 2012 she published her debut album “Hoarse Whisper”. Martyna’s latest projects include field recording workshops “Łowcy Dźwięków” [Sound Hunters] in Łaźnia Nowa Theatre in Cracow. She recently worked on the soundtrack for the choreography “A Hint of Wasabi” performed by the Adugna Dance Company in Plymouth (UK) in collaboration with composer Jamie Hamilton, made installations for AudioArt festival (Cracow, Poland 2012), Spor Festival (Aarhus, Denmark 2013) and the Jewish Culture Festival in Cracow.     Jasia Reichardt

    Writer on art, art critic and exhibition organizer. She was born in Poland but has lived in London most of her life. She was Assistant Director of the ICA in London (1963-71) and Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1974-76). She is principally interested in the relationships between art and science, art and technology and art and the history of ideas. Some of her best known exhibitions, such as “Between Poetry and Painting” (1965) and “Cybernetic Serendipity” (1968) were about the connections between one field and another. The principal idea of “Cybernetic Serendipity” exhibition was to examine the role of cybernetics in contemporary arts. She has written several books , including “The Computer in Art” (1971), “Robots – Fact, Fiction and Prediction” (1978) and edited “Cybernetics, Art and Ideas” (1971). She also worked on visualization of mathematics, a project called “Fantasia Mathematica”. She was one of the directors of ARTEC biennale in Japan (focused on art and technology) between 1989-98. In 1998 she staged an exhibition called “Electronically Yours” about electronic portraiture at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Since 1988 she has been looking after the Themerson Archive, the archive of a writer and an artist, whose avant-garde publishing company, Gaberbocchus Press, launched in 1957 a Common Room for artists interested in science and scientists interested in the arts. She continues to pursue her interests in the relationship of art and technology.

    Stelarc

    Stelarc is an Australian performance and installation artist who has internationally exhibited, presented and done performances in Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Australia. He has visually probed and acoustically amplified his body. He has made three films of the inside of his body, filming 3m of the internal space of his lungs, stomach and colon. Between 1976-1988 he completed 25 body suspension performances with hooks in the skin. He has used medical instruments, prosthetics, robotics, Virtual Reality systems, the Internet and biotechnology to explore alternate, intimate and involuntary interfaces with the body.   He has performed with a Third Hand, a Virtual Arm, a Stomach Sculpture and Exoskeleton, a six-legged walking robot. His Prosthetic Head is an embodied conversational agent that speaks to the person who interrogates it. As part of the Thinking Head Systems he collaborated with the Marcs Auditory Labs at the University of Western Sydney to develop the Articulated Head, the Floating Head and the Swarming Heads projects. He is surgically constructing and stem cell growing an Ear on Arm that will be electronically augmented and internet enabled. The first surgical procedures occurred in 2006. He has recently been performing with his four avatar and automaton clones on his Second Life site, exploring actual-virtual interfaces and gesture actuation of his avatar with Kinect.     Victoria Vesna

    A media artist and Professor at the UCLA Department of Design Media Arts and Director of the Art|Sci center at the School of the Arts and California Nanosystem Istitute (CNSI). She is currently a Visiting Proffesor nd Director of Reasearch at Parsons Art, Media + Technology, the New School for Design in New York and senior researcher at IMeRA - L’Institut Méditerranéen de Recherches Avancées in Marseille, France and Artist in Residece ant the Institute of Advanve Studies, Univesrity of Bristol. Her work can be defined as experimental creative research that resides between disciplines and technologies. With her instalation she explores how communication technologies affect collective behavior and how perception of Wales UK and has exhibite her work in over twenty solo exhibition, more than seventy group shows, her work is written about in many book chapters and her writings published in excess of twenty papers and gave 100+ invited talks in the last decade. Her most recent installlations – Blue Morph, Mood Swings and Waters Bowls, all aim to raise consciousness around the issues of our relationship to natural systems. other notable works are  Bodeies INCorporated, Datamining Bodies, nOtime oraz Cellular Trans_Action. She is the North American editor of Al & Society and in 2007 published an edited volume – Database Aesthetics : Art inthe age of Information Overflow, Minnesota Press.     A musician, audio-video programmer, violinist, singer, composer and the founder of “O” – the first Polish studio which specializes in the creation of interactive multimedia installations. He conducts workshops devoted to interactive multimedia programming, builds instruments, and creates music for theater, short films and animated movies.     Kacper Ziemianin

    Artist with classical musical education, who experienced numerous music adventures from black metal, through broken electronic music to ambient, noise and circuit bending. Sound travels led him to the Hague, where he is currently studying Sonology at a music conservatory. He graduated in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University in London. He also studied at the Music Academy in Cracow under the supervision of professor Marek Chołoniewski, in Berlin (UDK) under the supervision of dr. Alberto de Campo and in Amsterdam at STEIM. He also played in couple of bands and took part in several projects under various pseudonyms. He creates audio-visual installations, sound design for movies and was the author of the “Polish Deli” broadcast in London-based radio Resonance FM (2010-2013) where he promoted polish music and independent art. He performed and exhibited in Ireland, England, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland. In 2004 he received the “Dolina Kreatywna” award for his musical piece “Trans-formation”. Currently Ziemianin is busy building his own musical instruments and modifying already existing constructions, as well as interactive audio-visual installations. His “Around the Clock” installation, which he created in collaboration with the music gallery “Akusmata”, is an effect of a one-month residency in Helsinki at the “MUU association” ziemianin.net
