    9th August–4th October 2019 Openning: 9th August 2019, 6 pm ŁAŹNIA 2 Centre for Contemporary Art, Strajku Dokerów 5, Gdańsk - Nowy Port     Studiolo (from Italian) means a small studio, a study that serves for learning, experiments and research. It gained popularity in the era of the Renaissance, however, it derives from the Middle Ages, when it was termed to define the space for alchemical experiment. In this sense, the studiolo is the origin of a modern laboratory. During "Studiolo. Cosmic gardens" exhibition we will present contemporary studiolo, an experimental space for research and plant growth in an unusual conditions. The research will be grouped into three blocks: first one devoted to biological materials, the second to technologies that allows to form them and use as a growth medium, and the third shows the range of behaviors of plants cultivated in extreme conditions. How did Damien Hirst’s New Religion find its way to Gdańsk to become part of the Art+Science Meeting?This question is crucial to my understanding of the romance between art and science.For centuries, these phenomena have always come together, irrespective of the era.   Renaissance humanism formed the cornerstone of modern culture.The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries marked the rejection of academism in visual arts.This gave rise to the artistic fascination with revolutionary discoveries and scientific theories; artists began to delve into science, drawing on philosophy and psychology.They began to talk about extending the intellectual layer in art, while contestation and provocation became equally important to the artistic process as the ability to draw or paint.At the same time, there appeared voices highlighting the ever greater gap of understanding between humanists and scientists.Tumultuous political and social changes, together with unprecedented technological progress, created the conditions for socially engaged art.   Artistic protest turned into the leading canon throughout the entire 20th century.The intellectual and critical aspect of works dominated over aesthetics or skill.Damien Hirst also began his career by reaching for very strong means of expression.     Guy Ben Ary

    He is a Perth based artist and researcher. He is one of the core researchers of SymbioticA, an artistic laboratory dedicated to the research, learning and hands-on engagement with the life sciences, which is located within the University of Western Australia. Recognised internationally as a major artist and innovator working across science and media arts, Guy specialises in biotechnological artwork, which aims to enrich our understanding of what it means to be alive. Guy’s work has been shown across the globe at prestigious venues and festivals from the Beijing National Art Museum to San Paulo Biennale to the Moscow Biennale. His work can also be seen in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art in New York. In 2009, his work Silent Barrage was awarded an Honorary Mention in Prix Ars Electronica (Austria) and also won first prize at VIDA, a significant international competition for Art and Artificial Life. Guy’s Main research areas are cybernetics, bio-robotics  and the cultural articulation of Bio-technologies.     Wojciech Cwyk

    Sound operator, specialized in the production of documentary movies. He is the co-author of documentaries, TV spots, music scores. He graduated at the Gdańsk University of Technology. For many years he worked at Video Studio Gdańsk – the first independent television production studio in Poland. He was also member of journeys to the Middle East. He cooperates with polish and foreign production companies and television channels.     He is an Australian artist working in the area of ​​science, art and technology. His work involves robotics, real time 3D environments, camera tracking and sound focusing technology.   Donovan's work has evolved from a fascination with the natural phenomena of light and sound. In pursuing an intense understanding of the physical characteristics of sound and how it moves through space, he has developed an ability to modulate and combine its patterns for us to hear. Essentially, Donovan uses lenses to manipulate, focus and sculpt sound. This fascination with first began using optical lenses to focus light.     Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war. Monika Fleischmann works at the intersection of art, science and technology.     Paul Granjon

    born in Lyon, France, in 1965, BA Fine-Art in Marseille (France) 1990. He teaches part-time in Cardiff School of Art and Design, Cardiff, UK. He directed several short films between 1990 and 1999, moved to the UK in 1995 where his focus gradually shifted to performance and robotics. Since 1999 he developed and showed internationally live performances and exhibitions with hand-made robots and songs as well as workshops, collaborations and other projects. He was awarded a Nesta (National endowment for science technology and the arts) Fellowship (2004-2007) and was one of the artists representing Wales in the Venice Biennale 2005, where he exhibited a Robotarium.     Kirsten Hudson

    Dr Hudson is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University. Her research focuses on the philosophies and histories of the body, informed by gender studies, queer theory and French post-structuralism. This informs an art practice that critically resists and subverts normalising representations, constructions and perceptions of subjectivity, sociality and embodiment. Her current research projects visually and textually explore: 1. the ethical and aesthetic consequences of stem cell technologies on understandings of life, death and personhood; 2, the potential of the art object to articulate ideas, feelings and experiences of melancholy, nostalgia, memory and mourning in a way that actively challenges the limits and understandings of loss and desire is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University.     James Auger (b. 1970, Derby) and Jimmy Loizeau (b. 1968, St. Asaph) – have been collaborating since 2001. They have taken part in exhibitions in the UK and abroad, including Don’t tempt me (ICA, London; MoMA, New York, 2001), Future products (London, 2002), Mobilise (Dublin, 2003), Open Borders (Lille, 2004), Betes de style (MUDAC, Lausanne, 2006), Philips Design exhibition (Eindhoven, 2007), Design and the Elastic Mind (MoMA, New York, 2008), What If (Dublin, 2009), Action!     Przemysław Kamiński

    Cinematographer. He graduated the movie, television and photography picture realization at the Radio and Television Department at the Silesian University in Katowice.     Kristjan Loðmfjörð

    In the late nineties Kristján Loðmfjörð founded the film association Lortur along with film director Hafsteinn G. Sigurðsson. In the turn of the century Lortur became a populous group of young artists in Reykjavik, Iceland, producing experimental films as well as hosting the visual art biennale Drum Solo. After graduating from visual art in the year 2006 Kristján has worked as a visual artist, film director and editor. With the film medium Kristján explores the border between visual art and cinema, which allows him to emphasize the narration of visual language. Awards: Best documentary prize at the Edda Awards, the annual film and TV awards in Iceland, in 2007 for the film “Sins of the Fathers” (for script and editing), Third prize at the short film festival 2001 Frames in 2002 for the film “The Jacket Everybody Wanted to Wear”.     Karolina Żyniewicz

    Karolina Żyniewicz is an artist and a researcher. She earned her MA degree at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Strzemiński Academy of Art in Lodz (Poland), and is currently working on her PhD project under the Nature-Culture Programme of the Artes Liberales Faculty, University of Warsaw (Poland). While developing her artistic projects at biological laboratories, she also conducts ethnographic and autoethnographic observations, which help her explore the role of non-human actors, such as liminal beings, biofacts and transgenic organisms, in the production of contemporary culture. She shows her projects both at exhibitions (e.g. Pokusa nieśmiertelności/The Temptation of Immortality at the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw; Uporczywe upodobanie/Pernicious Predilection at the Labyrinth Gallery in Lublin) and at conferences and festivals (e.g. Taboo, Transgresion, Transcendance in Art&Science [Greece, Mexico], FEMeeting [Portugal], and Foro de Estudias Visuales [Mexico]). As an important part of her practices, she writes texts showcasing the performative process of art&science project development (e.g. “Art&science: Autoetnografia artystki realizującej projekty w laboratoriach biologicznych” in Kultura i społeczeństwo; “Ciało w świecie post-natury – byty liminalne. Projekt safe suicide” in Cięcie ciał-ruchome obrazy). In her work, she emphasises the epistemic and didactic dimensions of art. In 2016-2018, she collaborated with the education sections of  the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.     Film editor. He graduated at the Film and Television Academy in Warsaw. After the graduation he started commercial work (Open Productions since 2006, lazniak.com since 2010).     An astronomer, with a speciality in space telescopes and observational cosmology.   He is currently a researcher at the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille, and Acting Director for the Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille Provence. His specialty is in space instrumentation; he was the principal investigator for the NASA Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite at the University of California, Berkeley.   For 25 years he has been the Editor of the Art-Science publication Leonardo at MIT Press and an Executive Editor of the Leonardo Book Series at MIT Press.     Zbigniew Oksiuta

    Zbigniew Oksiuta is an artist, architect and researcher born in Mulubice in the Bialystok region. In the years 1970-78 he studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. In the years 1981-2010 he lived and worked in Cologne, Germany. From 2010 he lectures at the Faculty of Architecture, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York in the USA. The artist is working on a vision of the biological future. His projects are interdisciplinary interpenetration of elements of art, architecture and natural sciences. He took part in many international exhibitions, including: at the Center for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, at the International Design Fair in Cologne, at ArchiLab in Orléans in France. In 2004, he represented Poland at the group exhibition at the Architecture Biennale in Venice. He presented his projects at Ars Electronica in Linz in Austria, at the Biennale of Electronic Art in Perth, Australia, at the FACT Foundation for Arts and Creative Technology in Liverpool in Great Britain, at the Biennale for Electronic and Unstable Art in Stavanger, Norway, at the Arsenal Gallery in Bialystok and the Broad Art Museum in Lansing in the USA.     Prof. Michael Punt

    Professor of Art and Technology at the University of Plymouth where he is the convenor of Transtechnology Research and the Editor-in-Chief of Leonardo Reviews. He gained his PhD at the University of Amsterdam (Early Cinema and the Technological Imaginary) and has jointly produced two books on audio visual media and consciousness. He has published over 80 articles on cinema history and digital technology in key journals.     Michal Rataj

    Czech sound artist, musician. He studied musicology at the Charles University in Prague and composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2005. Since 2006 he is assistant professor and runs electroacoustic music theory and composition classes.     Łukasz Szałankiewicz (Zenial)

    Artist, sound designer, historian, electronic music curator. A member of the Polish Electroacoustic Music Association. He took part in international festivals in Europe, Asia, North and South America. In 2011 he took part in the Focus! Festival, organized in the Lincoln Center, by the prestige Juilliard School and the Polish Institute in New York. He performed in Poland during the following festivals: Audio Art, Unsound, Wro and at the Korkegrada Gallery in Warsaw, Contemporary Art Center Zamek Ujazdowski in Warsaw, Arsenał Gallery in Białystok, Centre of Contemporary Art  in Toruń and many other places.     Patrick Tresset

    A French artist and scientist who investigates human artistic activity, computational creativity and our relation to machines, in particular our relations with robotic entities. In the context of his art practice, Patrick uses robotics to create autonomous robotics entities that are evocative representations of the artist, and in a certain manner a representation of himself. His robots are based on advanced technologies using research findings from robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Patrick encountered and practiced computing, painting, drawing and sculpture from an early age in France. Following a degree in Business Computing, he migrated to London to become a painter. Between 1991 and 2003 his work was exhibited in solo and group shows in London and Paris. In 2003, Patrick lost his ability to paint and draw, he has since been working on computational and robotic systems that are able to simulate these artistic activities. Patrick’s research led him to join Goldsmiths, University of London, to study for a Master of Sciences in Arts Computing and until 2013, he codirected the AIkon II project with Prof. Frederic Fol Leymarie. The AIkon II project investigated the observational sketching activity through computational modeling and robotics. Patrick also created the creative robotics course taught to postgraduatestudents at Goldsmiths as part of the MFA Computational Arts programme. Patrick was recently a Senior fellow at the Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz in Germany and is a currently a visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London, United Kingdom.     Victoria Vesna

    A media artist and Professor at the UCLA Department of Design Media Arts and Director of the Art|Sci center at the School of the Arts and California Nanosystem Istitute (CNSI). She is currently a Visiting Proffesor nd Director of Reasearch at Parsons Art, Media + Technology, the New School for Design in New York and senior researcher at IMeRA - L’Institut Méditerranéen de Recherches Avancées in Marseille, France and Artist in Residece ant the Institute of Advanve Studies, Univesrity of Bristol. Her work can be defined as experimental creative research that resides between disciplines and technologies. With her instalation she explores how communication technologies affect collective behavior and how perception of Wales UK and has exhibite her work in over twenty solo exhibition, more than seventy group shows, her work is written about in many book chapters and her writings published in excess of twenty papers and gave 100+ invited talks in the last decade. Her most recent installlations – Blue Morph, Mood Swings and Waters Bowls, all aim to raise consciousness around the issues of our relationship to natural systems. other notable works are  Bodeies INCorporated, Datamining Bodies, nOtime oraz Cellular Trans_Action.     Jon Wozencroft

    Founder of the audiovisual publishers Touch started in 1982 as a means of exploring the powerful chemistry between sound and visual media. He is the author of “The Graphic Language of Neville Brody 1 & 2”, published by Thames & Hudson in 1988 and 1994, and the curator of the exhibition of the same name, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1988 and ultimately at Parco in Tokyo in 1990. In 1990, he set up FUSE with Neville Brody, a critical forum for the impact of digital media on type and visual communication. Alongside Touch, Wozencroft’s photography and design work has appeared in a number of publications, including Fax Art, Sampler, G1, Merz to Emigre and Beyond and most recently Cover Art By. He was the publisher of Vagabond (magazine co–edited with Jon Savage, 1992), and the editor/designer of Joy Division’s “Heart and soul box set” in 1997, with whom he also worked on the 2007 CD reissues by Warner Bros. Wozencroft has taught at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design, The London College of Printing, and has given lectures at numerous art colleges and universities around the world. He is presently Senior Tutor in sound and moving image in the School of Communication at the Royal College of Art.     Dr Ionat Zurr

    An artist and a researcher at SymbioticA – The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, School of Anatomy and Human Biology, the University of Western Australia. Ionat together with Oron Catts formed the internationally renowned Tissue Culture and Art Project. She has been an artist in residence in the School of Anatomy Physiology and Human Biology since 1996 and was central to the establishment of SymbioticA in 2000. Ionat is considered a pioneer in the field of biological arts and her research been published widely, exhibited internationally and her artwork has been collected by MoMA New York. Ionat is this year recipient of the Discovery Australian Reseach Council Award(2012); she has been a fellow in the InStem Institute, NCBS, Bangalore (2010) and a visiting scholar at The Experimental Art Centre, Stanford University (2007) and The Tissue Engineering & Organ Fabrication Laboratory, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School (2000-2001). She exhibited in places such as the MoMA NY, Mori Museum Tokyo, Ars Electronica, Linz, GOMA Brisbane and more.  www.tcaproject.org
