    9th August–4th October 2019 Openning: 9th August 2019, 6 pm ŁAŹNIA 2 Centre for Contemporary Art, Strajku Dokerów 5, Gdańsk - Nowy Port     Studiolo (from Italian) means a small studio, a study that serves for learning, experiments and research. It gained popularity in the era of the Renaissance, however, it derives from the Middle Ages, when it was termed to define the space for alchemical experiment. In this sense, the studiolo is the origin of a modern laboratory. During "Studiolo. Cosmic gardens" exhibition we will present contemporary studiolo, an experimental space for research and plant growth in an unusual conditions. The research will be grouped into three blocks: first one devoted to biological materials, the second to technologies that allows to form them and use as a growth medium, and the third shows the range of behaviors of plants cultivated in extreme conditions. Modernity and backwardness are obviously not only a matter of technology – not even mainly a matter of technology. They have never been. The material symbols of modernity – factories, tanks and schools in the 20th century, and motorways, fast trains, broadband Internet and high tech in the 21st century – show only one part and not even the most obvious one of the gigantic undertakings aimed at bringing backward countries to modernity. These attempts have been made many times in many countries on different continents and in different cultural and political contexts – including at least several attempts in Poland. At present, when the notion of modernisation is being used by Polish politicians from both the left and from the right side of the political scene it is important to know that we are not moving around on virgin territory.   *** How to catch up with the West?.     Marta Blassingg

    A Cultural and Media Anthropologist and Film and Cinema Theorist with a background in documentary filmmaking and film restoration. She is Research Fellow with Transtechnology Research, University of Plymouth, and Associate Editor for Leonardo Reviews. She is undertaking historical research in order to situate the metaphysical dimensions of technology and art within discourses of the philosophy of mind with a focus on the perceptual experience of audio-visual media.     Wojciech Cwyk

    Sound operator, specialized in the production of documentary movies. He is the co-author of documentaries, TV spots, music scores. He graduated at the Gdańsk University of Technology. For many years he worked at Video Studio Gdańsk – the first independent television production studio in Poland. He was also member of journeys to the Middle East. He cooperates with polish and foreign production companies and television channels. He worked on such movies and documentaries as “Nauczanie początkowe”, “Przerwany lot”, “W sypialni” and many others.

    Heather Dewey-Hagborg

    (b. 1982, Philadelphia) – is a transdisciplinary artist and educator who is interested in art as research and critical inquiry. Heather has shown work internationally at events and venues including the World Economic Forum, Ars Electronica festival in Linz, the Shenzhen Urbanism and Architecture Biennale, the Mediations Biennale in Poland, the Article Biennial in Norway, the Science Gallery Dublin, Transmediale in Berlin, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art in Germany, and Museum Boijmans, Van Abbemuseum, and MU Art Space in the Netherlands. She has exhibited nationally at PS1 MoMA, the New Museum, Eyebeam, the New York Public Library, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, among many others. Her work has been widely discussed in the media, from the New York Times and the BBC to TED and Wired. She is an Assistant Professor of Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

    Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     Thomas Feuerstein

    (b. 1968, Innsbruck) – studied art history and philosophy at the University of Innsbruck. He works as an artist and author in the fields of fine art and media art. Since 1997 he has held posts as a university lecturer and visiting professor. Thomas Feuerstein’s projects are realised using various media. They comprise installations, drawings, paintings, sculptures, photography, radio plays and netart. Some of the crucial aspects in his work are the interplay between verbal and visual elements, the unearthing of latent connections between fact and fiction, and the interaction between art and science.     John Grzinich

    mixed-media artist, who works since the early 90’ as a freelance artist and cultural coordinator, combining such divergent methods as field recording, kinetic sculpture, electroacoustic composition, performance, spatial perception and acoustics. In recent years Grzinich concentrated on giving workshops on various aspects of sound, that encourage collaboration through social communication, performance, mapping, recording and editing. He performed in North America, Europe and Japan and his compositions have been published by international labels such as: SIRR, Staalplaat, Erewhon, Intransitive, Cut, Elevator Bath, CMR, Orogenetics, Mystery Sea, Invisible Birds and others.     Damien Hirst

    Was born in 1965 in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. In 1984 he moved to London, where he worked in construction before studying for a BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths college from 1986 to 1989. Whilst in his second year, he conceived and curated a group exhibition entitled Freeze. The show is commonly acknowledged to have been the launching point not only for Hirst, but for a generation of British artists. Since the late 1980s,Hirst has used a varied practice of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing to explore the complex relationships between art, life and death, explaining:  “Art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else… there isn’t anything else.” Through work that includes the iconic shark in formaldehyde, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991) and For the Love of God (2007), a platinum cast of skull set with 8,601 flawless pavé-set diamonds, he investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the uncertainties at the heart of human experience. Hirst lives and works in Gloucester, Devon and London.  Since 1987, over 80 solo Damien Hirst exhibition have taken place worldwide, and his work has been included in over 260 group shows.     Ryan Jordan

    An electronic artist conducting experiments in derelict electronics, possession trance, retro-death-telegraphy and hylozoistic neural computation. His work focuses on self-built hardware, signal aesthetics, and the physical/material nature of experience. Jordan’s live performances make excessive use of stroboscopic light, high volume noise, and electronic stimulation of rocks in an attempt to induce hallucinatory and trance like states.     Michał Libera

    A sociologist, producer, curator and music critic. He is a regular contributor to Polish Radio (Channel 2), the editor of a musical series at the słowo/obraz terytoria publishing house, co-producer of a CD series devoted to the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio released by B.łt Rec, and co-producer of the Populista album series combining pop and conceptual art.   Libera is the cofounder of the 4.99 Foundation and the organizer of numerous concerts, workshops and rehearsals, including Playback-Play, plain. music, and The Song Is You.   He has published articles in Glissando, Res Publica, and Kultura Współczesna.   He regularly collaborates with the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, the Zamek Ujazdowski Center for Contemporary Art, and the Kr.likarnia Gallery of Sculpture.

    Karolina Żyniewicz

    Karolina Żyniewicz is an artist and a researcher. She earned her MA degree at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Strzemiński Academy of Art in Lodz (Poland), and is currently working on her PhD project under the Nature-Culture Programme of the Artes Liberales Faculty, University of Warsaw (Poland). While developing her artistic projects at biological laboratories, she also conducts ethnographic and autoethnographic observations, which help her explore the role of non-human actors, such as liminal beings, biofacts and transgenic organisms, in the production of contemporary culture. She shows her projects both at exhibitions (e.g. Pokusa nieśmiertelności/The Temptation of Immortality at the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw; Uporczywe upodobanie/Pernicious Predilection at the Labyrinth Gallery in Lublin) and at conferences and festivals (e.g. Taboo, Transgresion, Transcendance in Art&Science [Greece, Mexico], FEMeeting [Portugal], and Foro de Estudias Visuales [Mexico]). As an important part of her practices, she writes texts showcasing the performative process of art&science project development (e.g. “Art&science: Autoetnografia artystki realizującej projekty w laboratoriach biologicznych” in Kultura i społeczeństwo; “Ciało w świecie post-natury – byty liminalne. Projekt safe suicide” in Cięcie ciał-ruchome obrazy). In her work, she emphasises the epistemic and didactic dimensions of art.     Film editor. He graduated at the Film and Television Academy in Warsaw. After the graduation he started commercial work (Open Productions since 2006, lazniak.com since 2010).     Dmitry::vtol:: Morozov

    (b. 1986, Moscow) – implements his ideas in technological art: robotics, sound art and science art. He is the first batch producer of music and video synthesizers in the post-Soviet area.     Zbigniew Oksiuta

    Zbigniew Oksiuta is an artist, architect and researcher born in Mulubice in the Bialystok region. In the years 1970-78 he studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Warsaw University of Technology. In the years 1981-2010 he lived and worked in Cologne, Germany. From 2010 he lectures at the Faculty of Architecture, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York in the USA. The artist is working on a vision of the biological future. His projects are interdisciplinary interpenetration of elements of art, architecture and natural sciences. He took part in many international exhibitions, including: at the Center for Contemporary Art in Warsaw, at the International Design Fair in Cologne, at ArchiLab in Orléans in France. In 2004, he represented Poland at the group exhibition at the Architecture Biennale in Venice. He presented his projects at Ars Electronica in Linz in Austria, at the Biennale of Electronic Art in Perth, Australia, at the FACT Foundation for Arts and Creative Technology in Liverpool in Great Britain, at the Biennale for Electronic and Unstable Art in Stavanger, Norway, at the Arsenal Gallery in Bialystok and the Broad Art Museum in Lansing in the USA.     Porcje Rosołowe

    A project created by a duo – Mateusz Wysocki (also known as Fischerle) and Lech Nienartowicz. They willingly explore all kinds of audio glitches, however, they like to focus also on the organic nature of sound and listeners perception, for example a cooperation with Justyna Kociszewska had brought to life “Fungus & Sequoia” – an audiovisual installation presented at the Reworks Festival in Greece.     Jasia Reichardt

    Writer on art, art critic and exhibition organizer. She was born in Poland but has lived in London most of her life. She was Assistant Director of the ICA in London (1963-71) and Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1974-76). She is principally interested in the relationships between art and science, art and technology and art and the history of ideas. Some of her best known exhibitions, such as “Between Poetry and Painting” (1965) and “Cybernetic Serendipity” (1968) were about the connections between one field and another. The principal idea of “Cybernetic Serendipity” exhibition was to examine the role of cybernetics in contemporary arts. She has written several books , including “The Computer in Art” (1971), “Robots – Fact, Fiction and Prediction” (1978) and edited “Cybernetics, Art and Ideas” (1971). She also worked on visualization of mathematics, a project called “Fantasia Mathematica”. She was one of the directors of ARTEC biennale in Japan (focused on art and technology) between 1989-98. In 1998 she staged an exhibition called “Electronically Yours” about electronic portraiture at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Since 1988 she has been looking after the Themerson Archive, the archive of a writer and an artist, whose avant-garde publishing company, Gaberbocchus Press, launched in 1957 a Common Room for artists interested in science and scientists interested in the arts. She continues to pursue her interests in the relationship of art and technology.

    Łukasz Szałankiewicz (Zenial)

    Artist, sound designer, historian, electronic music curator. A member of the Polish Electroacoustic Music Association. He took part in international festivals in Europe, Asia, North and South America. In 2011 he took part in the Focus! Festival, organized in the Lincoln Center, by the prestige Juilliard School and the Polish Institute in New York. He performed in Poland during the following festivals: Audio Art, Unsound, Wro and at the Korkegrada Gallery in Warsaw, Contemporary Art Center Zamek Ujazdowski in Warsaw, Arsenał Gallery in Białystok, Centre of Contemporary Art  in Toruń and many other places. In his works he focuses at the musical searches, as well as on audiovisual performances and interactive installations. Beside strictly musical activities, he is also dealing with promoting polish artists in and outside the country. The co-creator of the Audiotong publishing house.     Patrick Tresset

    A French artist and scientist who investigates human artistic activity, computational creativity and our relation to machines, in particular our relations with robotic entities. In the context of his art practice, Patrick uses robotics to create autonomous robotics entities that are evocative representations of the artist, and in a certain manner a representation of himself. His robots are based on advanced technologies using research findings from robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Patrick encountered and practiced computing, painting, drawing and sculpture from an early age in France. Following a degree in Business Computing, he migrated to London to become a painter. Between 1991 and 2003 his work was exhibited in solo and group shows in London and Paris. In 2003, Patrick lost his ability to paint and draw, he has since been working on computational and robotic systems that are able to simulate these artistic activities. Patrick’s research led him to join Goldsmiths, University of London, to study for a Master of Sciences in Arts Computing and until 2013, he codirected the AIkon II project with Prof. Frederic Fol Leymarie. The AIkon II project investigated the observational sketching activity through computational modeling and robotics. Patrick also created the creative robotics course taught to postgraduatestudents at Goldsmiths as part of the MFA Computational Arts programme. Patrick was recently a Senior fellow at the Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz in Germany and is a currently a visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London, United Kingdom. As a researcher he has published academic papers in the fields of artificial intelligence, computational aesthetics, computational creativity, social robotics, drawing research, digital arts and computer graphics.     Bill Vorn

    Based in Montreal, Bill Vorn is active in the field of Robotic Art since 1992. His installation and performance projects involve robotics and motion control, sound, lighting, video and cybernetic processes. He pursues research and creation on Artificial Life and Agent Technologies through artistic work based on the Aesthetics of Artificial Behaviors. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Communication Studies from UQAM (Montreal) for his thesis on Artificial Life as a Media. He teaches Electronic Arts in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University (Intermedia/Cyberarts program) where he holds the rank of Full Professor.  His work has been presented in multiple international events, including Ars Electronica, ISEA, DEAF, Sonar, Art Futura, EMAF and Artec. He has been awarded the Vida 2.0 award (1999, Madrid), the Leprecon Award for Interactivity (1998, New York), the Prix Ars Electronica Distinction award (1996, Linz) and the International Digital Media Award (1996, Toronto). He has worked in collaboration with many canadian artists (including Edouard Lock, Robert Lepage, Gilles Maheu, LP Demers and Istvan Kantor).     Dr Ionat Zurr

    An artist and a researcher at SymbioticA – The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, School of Anatomy and Human Biology, the University of Western Australia. Ionat together with Oron Catts formed the internationally renowned Tissue Culture and Art Project. She has been an artist in residence in the School of Anatomy Physiology and Human Biology since 1996 and was central to the establishment of SymbioticA in 2000. Ionat is considered a pioneer in the field of biological arts and her research been published widely, exhibited internationally and her artwork has been collected by MoMA New York. Ionat is this year recipient of the Discovery Australian Reseach Council Award(2012); she has been a fellow in the InStem Institute, NCBS, Bangalore (2010) and a visiting scholar at The Experimental Art Centre, Stanford University (2007) and The Tissue Engineering & Organ Fabrication Laboratory, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School (2000-2001). She exhibited in places such as the MoMA NY, Mori Museum Tokyo, Ars Electronica, Linz, GOMA Brisbane and more.  www.tcaproject.org
