    9th August–4th October 2019 Openning: 9th August 2019, 6 pm ŁAŹNIA 2 Centre for Contemporary Art, Strajku Dokerów 5, Gdańsk - Nowy Port     Studiolo (from Italian) means a small studio, a study that serves for learning, experiments and research. It gained popularity in the era of the Renaissance, however, it derives from the Middle Ages, when it was termed to define the space for alchemical experiment. In this sense, the studiolo is the origin of a modern laboratory. During "Studiolo. Cosmic gardens" exhibition we will present contemporary studiolo, an experimental space for research and plant growth in an unusual conditions. Discourse around Homeopathy as a Social and Historiographic Myth | J. Jeszke

The phenomenon of homeopathy is one of the most important in the history of medicine. The doctrine and the linked therapeutic practice were developed in the time of the crisis which European medicine suffered at the turn of the 18th and the 19th centuries. With only minor changes in the theory and with almost no adjustment of the treatment procedure, homeopathy survived for two centuries and enjoyed wide acceptance from the patients and simultaneously strong controversies among the physicians. The invariability of homeopathy during such a long period makes it one of the most fascinating phenomena in European medical culture. The processes that took place in the 19th and 20th centuries changed not only the medicine but also the medical culture of Europe. It is important to remember that the changes were very dynamic. As an example we may refer to changes in the ideals of medical sciences, in biomedical paradigms, and standards of scientific rationale that have been taking place in medicine for the last 200 years. On the other hand, the changes were visible in perception of illness and all related visions of the world and of human beings. The social concept of health and illness has been changing equally dynamically and it was not always in line with the academic vision.     Jim Bond

    Started his career as a kinetic sculptor specialising in dynamic interactive installations using motors, electronics, sensors and computers in 1991 – while a student at Middlesex University, London – under the guidance of engineer and cartoonist Tim Hunkin and robotic sculptor Jim Whiting. In 2005 he won the JD Fergusson Award allowing him to create an exhibition of kinetic and sound sculptures Sound bites & the Untuned Eye which toured nationally ending with a major exhibition and specially commissioned installation at Kinetica Museum in London in 2007. He regularly works to commission and in 2010 created ‘Anamorphic Man’ a three dimensional optical illusion of a figure suspended in space. He has been visiting lecturer on the BA Fine Art course at Nottingham University since 2007 and has collaborated closely with IOU on large interactive kinetic and sound installations including ‘Airborne’ 2010 ‘Volatile Light’ 2011 and ‘Fulcrum’ 2013. http://www.jimbond.co.uk/

    Oron Catts

    He is an artist, researcher and curator whose pioneering work with the Tissue Culture and Art Project which he established with Ionat Zurr in 1996 is considered a leading biological art project.   In 2000 he founded SymbioticA, an artistic research centre housed within the School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology, The University of Western Australia. Under Oron’s leadership SymbioticA has gone on to win the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica in Hybrid Art (2007) and became a Centre for Excellence in 2008. Catts’ interest is life, more specifically the shifting relations and perceptions of life in the light of new knowledge and it application.   Often working in collaboration with other artists (mainly Ionat Zurr) and scientists, Catts have developed a body of work that speak volumes about the need to for new cultural articulation of evolving concepts of life. Oron was a Research Fellow in Harvard Medical School and a visiting Scholar at the Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University.   He is currently the Director of SymbioticA, a Visiting Professor of Design Interaction, Royal College of Arts, London, and a Visiting Researcher/consultant at Aalto University’s Future Art Base, Helsinki.     Marco Donnarumma

    Marco Donnarumma is a media and performance artist, director, composer and scholar. Since the early 2000s, he has been interbreeding contemporary performance, media art and computer music to inquire into the recondite matters of the human body. He is widely known for his performances probing the body through sound physicality, technological engineering and movement research. He owns a Ph.D. from Goldsmiths, University of London and is one of the next Research Fellows at the Akademie­ für Theater ­und Digitalität, Dortmund. His performances and artworks toured over 60 countries and are regularly presented at leading art, theater and dance venues. His current research looks at the links between ritual performance, artificial intelligence and body politics through the lens of abjection, violence and intimacy.    In 2013, he took part in audiovisual interactive biophysical performances Bios @ Techne @ Art, which took place at the ŁAŹNIA Center for Contemporary Art.     Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     Verena Friedrich

    (b. 1981, Hanau) – is an artist working in various disci-plines, such as installation, video, sound and biological practice. She holds degrees from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and the University of Art and Design Offenbach. Besides creating installations in which organic and biological media come into play, she is interested in direct interaction with scientists and hands-on work in bioscientific laboratories. In recent years, she has had research stays at the Laboratory of Stem Cell Bioengineering at EPF Lausanne in Switzerland and at SymbioticA – Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts at the University of Western Australia in Perth. Her projects have been presented internationally in the context of media art festivals, exhibitions and conferences and have been granted the International Media Award for Science and Art from ZKM Karlsruhe, a special mention in the VIDA 13.2 Awards and the Young Artist Award of the State of North-Rhine Westphalia.

    John Grzinich

    mixed-media artist, who works since the early 90’ as a freelance artist and cultural coordinator, combining such divergent methods as field recording, kinetic sculpture, electroacoustic composition, performance, spatial perception and acoustics. In recent years Grzinich concentrated on giving workshops on various aspects of sound, that encourage collaboration through social communication, performance, mapping, recording and editing. He performed in North America, Europe and Japan and his compositions have been published by international labels such as: SIRR, Staalplaat, Erewhon, Intransitive, Cut, Elevator Bath, CMR, Orogenetics, Mystery Sea, Invisible Birds and others.     Damien Hirst

    Was born in 1965 in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. In 1984 he moved to London, where he worked in construction before studying for a BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths college from 1986 to 1989. Whilst in his second year, he conceived and curated a group exhibition entitled Freeze. The show is commonly acknowledged to have been the launching point not only for Hirst, but for a generation of British artists. Since the late 1980s,Hirst has used a varied practice of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing to explore the complex relationships between art, life and death, explaining:  “Art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else… there isn’t anything else.” Through work that includes the iconic shark in formaldehyde, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991) and For the Love of God (2007), a platinum cast of skull set with 8,601 flawless pavé-set diamonds, he investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the uncertainties at the heart of human experience. Hirst lives and works in Gloucester, Devon and London.  Since 1987, over 80 solo Damien Hirst exhibition have taken place worldwide, and his work has been included in over 260 group shows.     Paweł Janicki

    creator of audiovisual interactive systems, installations and performances working in the field of media art, microsound aesthetics and algorithmic composition. He is associated with the WRO Center for Media Art, where he currently directs the WRO Laboratory. His musical net-performance Ping Melody was awarded by the Tokyo University Haramachida in 2004 the “netarts.org” Grand Prize, and gained a nomination for the Viper Festival in Basel. He was also co-founder and longtime member of the well-known collective Gameboyzz Orchestra Project, exploring lo-fi aesthetic. These and other projects by Paweł Janicki were presented at many prestigious festivals including the “Ars Electronica” and the “Transmediale” and events devoted to contemporary art in the Centre Pompidou.     Christina Kubisch

    Studied painting, music (flute and composition) and electronics in Hamburg, Graz, Zürich and Milano. After having worked as a flutist for contemporary music, she started to perform her own pieces, often combined with video. Since the end of the 70’ she focused on sound installations, sound sculptures and works with light. Her compositions are mostly electroacoustic, but she has written for ensembles as well and produced several audio works for radio. She received numerous grants and awards, such as the composition grant of the city of Berlin (1995), the honorary award of the German Sound Art Award (2008), Ars Electronica honorary mention (2008), SR Media Art Award (2009), City Sound Art Bonn / Beethovenstiftung (2013). Since 1974 she had solo exhibitions in Europe, USA, Australia, Japan and South America. She participated in several international festivals and group exhibitions such as: Pro Musica Nova, Bremen (1976 and 1980), Biennale of Venice (1980 and 1982), Ars Electronica, Linz (1987), Musik und Raum, Lucerne Festival (2004), European Capital of Culture project (2010). Her music has been released by various labels such as Cramps Records, Edition RZ, ampersand, semishigure, Die Schachtel, Olof Bright, AA Records, Important Records, Gruenrekorder and others. Christina Kubisch has been a visiting professor in Maastricht, Paris, Oxford and Berlin. From 1994 to 2013 she was professor for Audiovisual Art at the Academy of Fine Arts, Saarbrücken, Germany.     Pedro Lopes

    (b. 1986, Cascais) – is a computer scientist, artist & hardware developer. He is a researcher in Prof. Baudisch’s Human Computer Interaction Lab at the Hasso Plattner Institute (Germany). In his work there, Lopes has designed and prototyped devices that transform the body into an input and output interface through muscle sensing and stimulation. This research captured the interest of major media outlets such as NBC, Discovery Channel, NewScientist and Wired, and led him to publish in ACM CHI, UIST and SIGGRAPH. He is interested in the intersection of art and science and artistic research inspired by neuroscience, performance art and computing. He has performed as a sound artist at Transmediale (Germany), the Serralves Foundation (Portugal), Casa da Música (Portugal), Fylkingen & Future Places (Sweden) and collaborated with many sound & visual artists, including Carlos Zíngaro, André Gonçalves, Gabriel Ferrandini, Pedro Sousa, and in ensembles with William Winnant (Zorn’s Cobra) and Reinhold Friedl.

    Karolina Żyniewicz

    Karolina Żyniewicz is an artist and a researcher. She earned her MA degree at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Strzemiński Academy of Art in Lodz (Poland), and is currently working on her PhD project under the Nature-Culture Programme of the Artes Liberales Faculty, University of Warsaw (Poland). While developing her artistic projects at biological laboratories, she also conducts ethnographic and autoethnographic observations, which help her explore the role of non-human actors, such as liminal beings, biofacts and transgenic organisms, in the production of contemporary culture. She shows her projects both at exhibitions (e.g. Pokusa nieśmiertelności/The Temptation of Immortality at the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw; Uporczywe upodobanie/Pernicious Predilection at the Labyrinth Gallery in Lublin) and at conferences and festivals (e.g. Taboo, Transgresion, Transcendance in Art&Science [Greece, Mexico], FEMeeting [Portugal], and Foro de Estudias Visuales [Mexico]). As an important part of her practices, she writes texts showcasing the performative process of art&science project development (e.g. “Art&science: Autoetnografia artystki realizującej projekty w laboratoriach biologicznych” in Kultura i społeczeństwo; “Ciało w świecie post-natury – byty liminalne. Projekt safe suicide” in Cięcie ciał-ruchome obrazy). In her work, she emphasises the epistemic and didactic dimensions of art.     Paweł Łaźniak

    Film editor. He graduated at the Film and Television Academy in Warsaw. After the graduation he started commercial work (Open Productions since 2006, lazniak.com since 2010).     Oleg Mavromatti

    (1965, Russia) is an interdisciplinary artist and filmmaker, a prominent representative of the Moscow Actionism, a phenomenon of the radical performance art scene in 1990s Moscow. He has been a member of legendary Moscow performance art groups such as “Expropriation of the Territory of Art” and NECEZIUDIK. In 1995 Mavromatti establishes the independent film union SUPERNOVA, manifested as a fortress of Moscow radical cinema. Mavromatti has been legally prosecuted for his critical performance art and film work (such as the famous performance “Ne ver’ glazam” (“Do Not believe Your Eyes”), 2000, for what his art and film archive has been confiscated in 2000. Therefore many of his early works are completely lost or accessible only from VHS copies. Mavromatti left the country in 2000 and since then he lives in Bulgaria and New York.  In Bulgaria, Rossa and Mavromatti established art collective ULTRAFUTURO – an international group of artists engaged with issues of technology, science and their social implications. They have been included in the Biennial for Electronic Art, Perth (BEAP) and shown at Foundation for Art and Creative Technologies (FACT), Liverpool; Society for Art and Technology (SAT), Montreal etc.

    Sound and recording artist. His work is based on the sounds of nature and its effect on humans. He primarily uses field recordings and electronic composition as a working method.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music. Ignis released records by: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, Chaos As Shelter, EA and Spear.     Martyna Poznańska

    Sound artist and performer. She studied Art of Sound at the University of the Arts, London and took part in the Sound Laboratory by Olga Szwajgier. She participated in numerous workshops led for instance by Meredith Monk. Poznańska is involved in the experimental music movement “Muzykoterapia” [Musictherapy] in Cracow. In her work she concentrates on the possibility of exploring, better consciousness and reduction of the level of noise in urban space. In the year 2012 she published her debut album “Hoarse Whisper”. Martyna’s latest projects include field recording workshops “Łowcy Dźwięków” [Sound Hunters] in Łaźnia Nowa Theatre in Cracow. She recently worked on the soundtrack for the choreography “A Hint of Wasabi” performed by the Adugna Dance Company in Plymouth (UK) in collaboration with composer Jamie Hamilton, made installations for AudioArt festival (Cracow, Poland 2012), Spor Festival (Aarhus, Denmark 2013) and the Jewish Culture Festival in Cracow.     Boryana Rossa

    (born 1972) is a Bulgarian interdisciplinary artist and curator making performance art, video and photographic work.Her artwork has been exhibited internationally including most notably at the National Gallery of Fine Arts inSofia,Goethe Institute, the Moscow Biennial, the Elizabeth A. Sackler Center for Feminist Art at the Brooklyn Museum,Exit Art, Biennial for Electronic Art in Perth, and Foundation for Art and Creative Technologies in Liverpool. She frequently collaborates with artist and filmmakerOleg Mavromatioften under the title ULTRAFUTURO – an international art collective started in 2004. Some of her awards and grants include the Gaudenz B.     Urszula Skiepko

    Urszula Skiepko graduated in Performance Studies from the Jagiellonian University, Cracow (Poland). In recent years, she has worked with new technologies, among others as a QA Specialist in VR & AR projects. Currently, she is collaborating with DataWorkshop on practical applications of machine learning and education in this field. In 2019, she co-organised the DWCC: Machine Learning Conference and curated an ML art exhibition as part of this event. In her leisure moments, she explores the concept of cyborg in science and culture.     Patrick Tresset

    A French artist and scientist who investigates human artistic activity, computational creativity and our relation to machines, in particular our relations with robotic entities. In the context of his art practice, Patrick uses robotics to create autonomous robotics entities that are evocative representations of the artist, and in a certain manner a representation of himself. His robots are based on advanced technologies using research findings from robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Patrick encountered and practiced computing, painting, drawing and sculpture from an early age in France. Following a degree in Business Computing, he migrated to London to become a painter. Between 1991 and 2003 his work was exhibited in solo and group shows in London and Paris. In 2003, Patrick lost his ability to paint and draw, he has since been working on computational and robotic systems that are able to simulate these artistic activities. Patrick’s research led him to join Goldsmiths, University of London, to study for a Master of Sciences in Arts Computing and until 2013, he codirected the AIkon II project with Prof. Frederic Fol Leymarie. The AIkon II project investigated the observational sketching activity through computational modeling and robotics. Patrick also created the creative robotics course taught to postgraduatestudents at Goldsmiths as part of the MFA Computational Arts programme. Patrick was recently a Senior fellow at the Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz in Germany and is a currently a visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London, United Kingdom.     Bill Vorn

    Based in Montreal, Bill Vorn is active in the field of Robotic Art since 1992. His installation and performance projects involve robotics and motion control, sound, lighting, video and cybernetic processes. He pursues research and creation on Artificial Life and Agent Technologies through artistic work based on the Aesthetics of Artificial Behaviors. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Communication Studies from UQAM (Montreal) for his thesis on Artificial Life as a Media. He teaches Electronic Arts in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University (Intermedia/Cyberarts program) where he holds the rank of Full Professor.  His work has been presented in multiple international events, including Ars Electronica, ISEA, DEAF, Sonar, Art Futura, EMAF and Artec. He has been awarded the Vida 2.0 award (1999, Madrid), the Leprecon Award for Interactivity (1998, New York), the Prix Ars Electronica Distinction award (1996, Linz) and the International Digital Media Award (1996, Toronto). He has worked in collaboration with many canadian artists (including Edouard Lock, Robert Lepage, Gilles Maheu, LP Demers and Istvan Kantor).     Where Dogs Run

    Alexey Korzukhin (b.1974), Vladislav Bulatov (b.1975), Natalia Grekhova (b.1976), Olga Inozemtseva (b.1977). The group was formed in 2000 in Yekaterinburg (Russia). It represents a wide range of contemporary multimedia arts. In its artworks the group addresses spontaneous bodily experiences and mythological narrations, as well as optical and language illusions.     Kacper Ziemianin

    Artist with classical musical education, who experienced numerous music adventures from black metal, through broken electronic music to ambient, noise and circuit bending. Sound travels led him to the Hague, where he is currently studying Sonology at a music conservatory. He graduated in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University in London. He also studied at the Music Academy in Cracow under the supervision of professor Marek Chołoniewski, in Berlin (UDK) under the supervision of dr. Alberto de Campo and in Amsterdam at STEIM. He also played in couple of bands and took part in several projects under various pseudonyms. He creates audio-visual installations, sound design for movies and was the author of the “Polish Deli” broadcast in London-based radio Resonance FM (2010-2013) where he promoted polish music and independent art. He performed and exhibited in Ireland, England, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland. In 2004 he received the “Dolina Kreatywna” award for his musical piece “Trans-formation”. Currently Ziemianin is busy building his own musical instruments and modifying already existing constructions, as well as interactive audio-visual installations. His “Around the Clock” installation, which he created in collaboration with the music gallery “Akusmata”, is an effect of a one-month residency in Helsinki at the “MUU association” ziemianin.net
