    9th August–4th October 2019 Openning: 9th August 2019, 6 pm ŁAŹNIA 2 Centre for Contemporary Art, Strajku Dokerów 5, Gdańsk - Nowy Port     Studiolo (from Italian) means a small studio, a study that serves for learning, experiments and research. It gained popularity in the era of the Renaissance, however, it derives from the Middle Ages, when it was termed to define the space for alchemical experiment. In this sense, the studiolo is the origin of a modern laboratory. During "Studiolo. Cosmic gardens" exhibition we will present contemporary studiolo, an experimental space for research and plant growth in an unusual conditions. Ryszard W. Kluszczynski about the exhibition “Beyond Borders. Processed Body – Expanded Brain – Distributed Agency”, disappearing of the whole, the moon and seeing solely a chicken – a talk  Martyna Maurin   It is a hot June day, and processions are slowly moving along the city streets, with public transport adjusting its schedule to this festivity, gardens and air-conditioned pubs bursting at the seams despite the time of day being early for a public holiday. It is not easy to arrange the meeting with the professor who could easily share his schedule with not more than one academician but a whole university, yet he has found the time for our discussion… Our meeting is connected with an exhibition planned for the November, being one of the events included in the Art+Science Meeting project.     A Cultural and Media Anthropologist and Film and Cinema Theorist with a background in documentary filmmaking and film restoration. She is Research Fellow with Transtechnology Research, University of Plymouth, and Associate Editor for Leonardo Reviews. She is undertaking historical research in order to situate the metaphysical dimensions of technology and art within discourses of the philosophy of mind with a focus on the perceptual experience of audio-visual media.     Oron Catts

    He is an artist, researcher and curator whose pioneering work with the Tissue Culture and Art Project which he established with Ionat Zurr in 1996 is considered a leading biological art project.   In 2000 he founded SymbioticA, an artistic research centre housed within the School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology, The University of Western Australia. Under Oron’s leadership SymbioticA has gone on to win the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica in Hybrid Art (2007) and became a Centre for Excellence in 2008. Catts’ interest is life, more specifically the shifting relations and perceptions of life in the light of new knowledge and it application.   Often working in collaboration with other artists (mainly Ionat Zurr) and scientists, Catts have developed a body of work that speak volumes about the need to for new cultural articulation of evolving concepts of life. Oron was a Research Fellow in Harvard Medical School and a visiting Scholar at the Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University.   He is currently the Director of SymbioticA, a Visiting Professor of Design Interaction, Royal College of Arts, London, and a Visiting Researcher/consultant at Aalto University’s Future Art Base, Helsinki.     Adam Donovan

    He is an Australian artist working in the area of ​​science, art and technology. His work involves robotics, real time 3D environments, camera tracking and sound focusing technology.   Donovan's work has evolved from a fascination with the natural phenomena of light and sound. In pursuing an intense understanding of the physical characteristics of sound and how it moves through space, he has developed an ability to modulate and combine its patterns for us to hear. Essentially, Donovan uses lenses to manipulate, focus and sculpt sound. This fascination with first began using optical lenses to focus light.     Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     Anna Friz

    Canadian sound and radio artist who specializes in multi-channel transmission systems for installation, performance, and broadcast, where radio is the source, subject and medium of the work. She also creates dynamic, atmospheric compositions for theatre, dance, film, and solo performance that are equally able to reflect upon public media culture or to reveal deeply expressive interior landscapes. She has performed and exhibited widely across North America, South America, and Europe, and her radio art/works have been heard on the airwaves of more than 20 countries. In 2011, Anna earned a Ph.D. in Communication and Culture from York University, Toronto, and she recently completed a post-doctoral fellowship in the Sound Department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.     Michał Górczyński

    graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. Since 1998 he writes music for different instrument constellations (“Diversification” two fagots and a clarinet, “Rondo a la krakowiak” a screaming pianist and bass clarinet, “Painting” two clarinets, a fagot, a contrabass and singing) and theatres (about 25 performances for drama and puppet theatres). He used to perform as a soloist with groups like: de Ereprijs, Kwartet Śląski, „Aukso” Orchestra, Podlaska Filharmony. He creates installations, theoretical texts about his authorial concepts, radio auditions and underground movies. Since 2008 he works on expanding the sound possibilities of the bass clarinet, gaining inspirations from beatbox.     Kirsten Hudson

    Dr Hudson is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University. Her research focuses on the philosophies and histories of the body, informed by gender studies, queer theory and French post-structuralism. This informs an art practice that critically resists and subverts normalising representations, constructions and perceptions of subjectivity, sociality and embodiment. Her current research projects visually and textually explore: 1. the ethical and aesthetic consequences of stem cell technologies on understandings of life, death and personhood; 2, the potential of the art object to articulate ideas, feelings and experiences of melancholy, nostalgia, memory and mourning in a way that actively challenges the limits and understandings of loss and desire is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University.     James Auger (b. 1970, Derby) and Jimmy Loizeau (b. 1968, St. Asaph) – have been collaborating since 2001.     Konrad Korabiewski

    Experimental multimedia artist, currently residing in Iceland. As a sound artist, composer and media artist, Konrad Korabiewski has a minimalistic, yet detail-oriented unconventional and experimental artistic approach, characterized by a marked tendency to transgress various genres and media. Focused on absorption, substance and values rather than a certain media, he experiments and develops new possibilities for expressing philosophical views and artistic ideologies in sensing music and art. This is also highly visible at Korabiewski’s live performances, during which other actors and medias are involved to add layers and new dimensions to his music, sound and radio art pieces, installations and video-works. In 2011 Konrad Korabiewski won the international sound-art competition “Europe – A Sound Panorama” and recently got awarded the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD residency & working grant for 2014.     Karolina Żyniewicz

    Karolina Żyniewicz is an artist and a researcher. She earned her MA degree at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Strzemiński Academy of Art in Lodz (Poland), and is currently working on her PhD project under the Nature-Culture Programme of the Artes Liberales Faculty, University of Warsaw (Poland). While developing her artistic projects at biological laboratories, she also conducts ethnographic and autoethnographic observations, which help her explore the role of non-human actors, such as liminal beings, biofacts and transgenic organisms, in the production of contemporary culture. She shows her projects both at exhibitions (e.g. Pokusa nieśmiertelności/The Temptation of Immortality at the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw; Uporczywe upodobanie/Pernicious Predilection at the Labyrinth Gallery in Lublin) and at conferences and festivals (e.g. Taboo, Transgresion, Transcendance in Art&Science [Greece, Mexico], FEMeeting [Portugal], and Foro de Estudias Visuales [Mexico]). As an important part of her practices, she writes texts showcasing the performative process of art&science project development (e.g. “Art&science: Autoetnografia artystki realizującej projekty w laboratoriach biologicznych” in Kultura i społeczeństwo; “Ciało w świecie post-natury – byty liminalne. Projekt safe suicide” in Cięcie ciał-ruchome obrazy). In her work, she emphasises the epistemic and didactic dimensions of art. In 2016-2018, she collaborated with the education sections of  the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.     Dmitry::vtol:: Morozov

    (b. 1986, Moscow) – implements his ideas in technological art: robotics, sound art and science art. He is the first batch producer of music and video synthesizers in the post-Soviet area. Besides making music and instruments, Morozov creates art installations and promotes circuit-bending and DIY electronics through lectures and workshops.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music. Ignis released records by: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, Chaos As Shelter, EA and Spear.     Porcje Rosołowe

    A project created by a duo – Mateusz Wysocki (also known as Fischerle) and Lech Nienartowicz. They willingly explore all kinds of audio glitches, however, they like to focus also on the organic nature of sound and listeners perception, for example a cooperation with Justyna Kociszewska had brought to life “Fungus & Sequoia” – an audiovisual installation presented at the Reworks Festival in Greece.     Jasia Reichardt

    Writer on art, art critic and exhibition organizer. She was born in Poland but has lived in London most of her life. She was Assistant Director of the ICA in London (1963-71) and Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1974-76). She is principally interested in the relationships between art and science, art and technology and art and the history of ideas. Some of her best known exhibitions, such as “Between Poetry and Painting” (1965) and “Cybernetic Serendipity” (1968) were about the connections between one field and another. The principal idea of “Cybernetic Serendipity” exhibition was to examine the role of cybernetics in contemporary arts. She has written several books , including “The Computer in Art” (1971), “Robots – Fact, Fiction and Prediction” (1978) and edited “Cybernetics, Art and Ideas” (1971). She also worked on visualization of mathematics, a project called “Fantasia Mathematica”. She was one of the directors of ARTEC biennale in Japan (focused on art and technology) between 1989-98. In 1998 she staged an exhibition called “Electronically Yours” about electronic portraiture at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Since 1988 she has been looking after the Themerson Archive, the archive of a writer and an artist, whose avant-garde publishing company, Gaberbocchus Press, launched in 1957 a Common Room for artists interested in science and scientists interested in the arts. She continues to pursue her interests in the relationship of art and technology.

    Christa Sommerer i Laurent Mignonneau

    World famous media artists, creating mostly interactive computer installations. They are both teachers at the University of Art and Design in Linz, Austria, where they lead the Division of Culture at the Institute for the Media Interface. Their cooperation, which continues to this day, began in 1992 at the Institute for New Media in Staedelschule in Frankfurt.     Patrick Tresset

    A French artist and scientist who investigates human artistic activity, computational creativity and our relation to machines, in particular our relations with robotic entities. In the context of his art practice, Patrick uses robotics to create autonomous robotics entities that are evocative representations of the artist, and in a certain manner a representation of himself. His robots are based on advanced technologies using research findings from robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Patrick encountered and practiced computing, painting, drawing and sculpture from an early age in France. Following a degree in Business Computing, he migrated to London to become a painter. Between 1991 and 2003 his work was exhibited in solo and group shows in London and Paris. In 2003, Patrick lost his ability to paint and draw, he has since been working on computational and robotic systems that are able to simulate these artistic activities. Patrick’s research led him to join Goldsmiths, University of London, to study for a Master of Sciences in Arts Computing and until 2013, he codirected the AIkon II project with Prof. Frederic Fol Leymarie. The AIkon II project investigated the observational sketching activity through computational modeling and robotics. Patrick also created the creative robotics course taught to postgraduatestudents at Goldsmiths as part of the MFA Computational Arts programme. Patrick was recently a Senior fellow at the Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz in Germany and is a currently a visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London, United Kingdom.     Bill Vorn

    Based in Montreal, Bill Vorn is active in the field of Robotic Art since 1992. His installation and performance projects involve robotics and motion control, sound, lighting, video and cybernetic processes. He pursues research and creation on Artificial Life and Agent Technologies through artistic work based on the Aesthetics of Artificial Behaviors. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Communication Studies from UQAM (Montreal) for his thesis on Artificial Life as a Media. He teaches Electronic Arts in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University (Intermedia/Cyberarts program) where he holds the rank of Full Professor.  His work has been presented in multiple international events, including Ars Electronica, ISEA, DEAF, Sonar, Art Futura, EMAF and Artec. He has been awarded the Vida 2.0 award (1999, Madrid), the Leprecon Award for Interactivity (1998, New York), the Prix Ars Electronica Distinction award (1996, Linz) and the International Digital Media Award (1996, Toronto). He has worked in collaboration with many canadian artists (including Edouard Lock, Robert Lepage, Gilles Maheu, LP Demers and Istvan Kantor).     Maciej Wojnicki

    A visual artist. She is graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow where she finished a PhD. She is also a junior lecturer at the Academy of Arts in Szczecin. She cooperates with the leading Polish modern art institutions: Zachęta Gallery, Museum of Art in Łódź, Wyspa Institute of Art and the Ujazdowski Castle. In 2007, she represented Poland at the European artists’ exhibition in Brussels. She has twice held a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, and has won the Eugeniusz Geppert Award for her achievements in painting. In 2009 she was nominated to the Deutsche Bank Award for the best young artist, and was Artist of the Year of the Arteon art magazine in 2010. Her projects have been presented in Poland, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Turkey, Hungary and Canada.     Kacper Ziemianin

    Artist with classical musical education, who experienced numerous music adventures from black metal, through broken electronic music to ambient, noise and circuit bending. Sound travels led him to the Hague, where he is currently studying Sonology at a music conservatory. He graduated in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University in London. He also studied at the Music Academy in Cracow under the supervision of professor Marek Chołoniewski, in Berlin (UDK) under the supervision of dr. Alberto de Campo and in Amsterdam at STEIM. He also played in couple of bands and took part in several projects under various pseudonyms. He creates audio-visual installations, sound design for movies and was the author of the “Polish Deli” broadcast in London-based radio Resonance FM (2010-2013) where he promoted polish music and independent art. He performed and exhibited in Ireland, England, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland. In 2004 he received the “Dolina Kreatywna” award for his musical piece “Trans-formation”. Currently Ziemianin is busy building his own musical instruments and modifying already existing constructions, as well as interactive audio-visual installations. His “Around the Clock” installation, which he created in collaboration with the music gallery “Akusmata”, is an effect of a one-month residency in Helsinki at the “MUU association” ziemianin.net
