    9th August–4th October 2019 Openning: 9th August 2019, 6 pm ŁAŹNIA 2 Centre for Contemporary Art, Strajku Dokerów 5, Gdańsk - Nowy Port     Studiolo (from Italian) means a small studio, a study that serves for learning, experiments and research. It gained popularity in the era of the Renaissance, however, it derives from the Middle Ages, when it was termed to define the space for alchemical experiment. In this sense, the studiolo is the origin of a modern laboratory. During "Studiolo. Cosmic gardens" exhibition we will present contemporary studiolo, an experimental space for research and plant growth in an unusual conditions. The hero finds himself in a landscape of bizarre colours, where people take on the shades of their surroundings. They become invisible. However, their voices can be heard. Voices and music uncannily able to convey their own story. As though all possible sounds were simultaneously available in an intense, instant act of listening. The dream has a tragic ending: ”Suddenly something horrible happened: my head swelled up, to such a degree that the landscape grew darker, and the people broke out in wailing, such terrible wailing as I have never heard.     Marta Blassingg

    A Cultural and Media Anthropologist and Film and Cinema Theorist with a background in documentary filmmaking and film restoration. She is Research Fellow with Transtechnology Research, University of Plymouth, and Associate Editor for Leonardo Reviews. She is undertaking historical research in order to situate the metaphysical dimensions of technology and art within discourses of the philosophy of mind with a focus on the perceptual experience of audio-visual media. She is currently co-investigating the EU HERA project “Technology, Exchange and Flow: Artistic Media Practices and Commercial Application”.     Oron Catts

    He is an artist, researcher and curator whose pioneering work with the Tissue Culture and Art Project which he established with Ionat Zurr in 1996 is considered a leading biological art project.   In 2000 he founded SymbioticA, an artistic research centre housed within the School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology, The University of Western Australia. Under Oron’s leadership SymbioticA has gone on to win the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica in Hybrid Art (2007) and became a Centre for Excellence in 2008. Catts’ interest is life, more specifically the shifting relations and perceptions of life in the light of new knowledge and it application.   Often working in collaboration with other artists (mainly Ionat Zurr) and scientists, Catts have developed a body of work that speak volumes about the need to for new cultural articulation of evolving concepts of life. Oron was a Research Fellow in Harvard Medical School and a visiting Scholar at the Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University.   He is currently the Director of SymbioticA, a Visiting Professor of Design Interaction, Royal College of Arts, London, and a Visiting Researcher/consultant at Aalto University’s Future Art Base, Helsinki.     Marco Donnarumma

    Marco Donnarumma is a media and performance artist, director, composer and scholar. Since the early 2000s, he has been interbreeding contemporary performance, media art and computer music to inquire into the recondite matters of the human body. He is widely known for his performances probing the body through sound physicality, technological engineering and movement research. He owns a Ph.D. from Goldsmiths, University of London and is one of the next Research Fellows at the Akademie­ für Theater ­und Digitalität, Dortmund. His performances and artworks toured over 60 countries and are regularly presented at leading art, theater and dance venues. His current research looks at the links between ritual performance, artificial intelligence and body politics through the lens of abjection, violence and intimacy.    In 2013, he took part in audiovisual interactive biophysical performances Bios @ Techne @ Art, which took place at the ŁAŹNIA Center for Contemporary Art.     Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     Verena Friedrich

    (b. 1981, Hanau) – is an artist working in various disci-plines, such as installation, video, sound and biological practice. She holds degrees from the Academy of Media Arts Cologne and the University of Art and Design Offenbach. Besides creating installations in which organic and biological media come into play, she is interested in direct interaction with scientists and hands-on work in bioscientific laboratories. In recent years, she has had research stays at the Laboratory of Stem Cell Bioengineering at EPF Lausanne in Switzerland and at SymbioticA – Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts at the University of Western Australia in Perth. Her projects have been presented internationally in the context of media art festivals, exhibitions and conferences and have been granted the International Media Award for Science and Art from ZKM Karlsruhe, a special mention in the VIDA 13.2 Awards and the Young Artist Award of the State of North-Rhine Westphalia.

    Paul Granjon

    born in Lyon, France, in 1965, BA Fine-Art in Marseille (France) 1990. He teaches part-time in Cardiff School of Art and Design, Cardiff, UK. He directed several short films between 1990 and 1999, moved to the UK in 1995 where his focus gradually shifted to performance and robotics. Since 1999 he developed and showed internationally live performances and exhibitions with hand-made robots and songs as well as workshops, collaborations and other projects. He was awarded a Nesta (National endowment for science technology and the arts) Fellowship (2004-2007) and was one of the artists representing Wales in the Venice Biennale 2005, where he exhibited a Robotarium.     Kirsten Hudson

    Dr Hudson is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University. Her research focuses on the philosophies and histories of the body, informed by gender studies, queer theory and French post-structuralism. This informs an art practice that critically resists and subverts normalising representations, constructions and perceptions of subjectivity, sociality and embodiment. Her current research projects visually and textually explore: 1. the ethical and aesthetic consequences of stem cell technologies on understandings of life, death and personhood; 2, the potential of the art object to articulate ideas, feelings and experiences of melancholy, nostalgia, memory and mourning in a way that actively challenges the limits and understandings of loss and desire is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University.     Katarzyna Jankowska

    Graduated in painting at the Fine Arts Department at the Mikołaj Kopernik University in Toruń and finished the Museum Curator post graduate studies at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków. She is involved in nongovernmental organizations in Toruń – as Head of the Fabryka UTU Foundation and member of the Sztuka Cię Szuka (Art Seeks You) Association. Jankowska is the author of workshop concepts and scripts as well as of educational and artistic actions.     Prof. dr hab. Ryszard W. Kluszczyński

    Professor at the University of Łódź and the Łódź Academy of Fine Arts, lecturer at the National Film School in Łódź. His field of interest includes first and foremost: video art, multimedia and avant-garde cinema, but he also explores the problems of cyber culture. In 1990-2001 he was the curator at Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw. Kluszczyński was the curator at the Modern Art Biennale in Poznań in 2010. He is the artistic director of the Art+Science Meeting project.

    Kristjan Loðmfjörð

    In the late nineties Kristján Loðmfjörð founded the film association Lortur along with film director Hafsteinn G. Sigurðsson. In the turn of the century Lortur became a populous group of young artists in Reykjavik, Iceland, producing experimental films as well as hosting the visual art biennale Drum Solo. After graduating from visual art in the year 2006 Kristján has worked as a visual artist, film director and editor. With the film medium Kristján explores the border between visual art and cinema, which allows him to emphasize the narration of visual language. Awards: Best documentary prize at the Edda Awards, the annual film and TV awards in Iceland, in 2007 for the film “Sins of the Fathers” (for script and editing), Third prize at the short film festival 2001 Frames in 2002 for the film “The Jacket Everybody Wanted to Wear”.     Karolina Żyniewicz

    Karolina Żyniewicz is an artist and a researcher. She earned her MA degree at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Strzemiński Academy of Art in Lodz (Poland), and is currently working on her PhD project under the Nature-Culture Programme of the Artes Liberales Faculty, University of Warsaw (Poland). While developing her artistic projects at biological laboratories, she also conducts ethnographic and autoethnographic observations, which help her explore the role of non-human actors, such as liminal beings, biofacts and transgenic organisms, in the production of contemporary culture. She shows her projects both at exhibitions (e.g. Pokusa nieśmiertelności/The Temptation of Immortality at the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw; Uporczywe upodobanie/Pernicious Predilection at the Labyrinth Gallery in Lublin) and at conferences and festivals (e.g. Taboo, Transgresion, Transcendance in Art&Science [Greece, Mexico], FEMeeting [Portugal], and Foro de Estudias Visuales [Mexico]). As an important part of her practices, she writes texts showcasing the performative process of art&science project development (e.g. “Art&science: Autoetnografia artystki realizującej projekty w laboratoriach biologicznych” in Kultura i społeczeństwo; “Ciało w świecie post-natury – byty liminalne. Projekt safe suicide” in Cięcie ciał-ruchome obrazy). In her work, she emphasises the epistemic and didactic dimensions of art. In 2016-2018, she collaborated with the education sections of  the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.     Film editor. He graduated at the Film and Television Academy in Warsaw. After the graduation he started commercial work (Open Productions since 2006, lazniak.com since 2010).     Robert Mitchell

    (b. 1969, Atlanta) – is the Marcello Lotti Professor of English and Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Science and Cultural Theory at Duke University (US). He earned a PhD from the University of Washington in 2001. He is co-author of Tissue Economies (Duke University Press, 2006), Sympathy and the State in the Romantic Era (Routledge, 2007), Bioart and the Vitality of Media (University of Washington Press, 2010) and Experimental Life: Vitalism in Romantic Science and Literature Johns Hopkins University Press, 2013). Robert Mitchell has guest lectured in the US and internationally, including Stanford University (Palo Alto) The New School (New York), University of Toronto (Toronto), Université de Montréal (Montreal), Oxford University (Oxford), London School of Economics (London), The Nottingham Trent University (Nottingham) and others.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music. Ignis released records by: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, Chaos As Shelter, EA and Spear.     Porcje Rosołowe

    A project created by a duo – Mateusz Wysocki (also known as Fischerle) and Lech Nienartowicz. They willingly explore all kinds of audio glitches, however, they like to focus also on the organic nature of sound and listeners perception, for example a cooperation with Justyna Kociszewska had brought to life “Fungus & Sequoia” – an audiovisual installation presented at the Reworks Festival in Greece.     Michal Rataj

    Czech sound artist, musician. He studied musicology at the Charles University in Prague and composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2005. Since 2006 he is assistant professor and runs electroacoustic music theory and composition classes.     Christa Sommerer i Laurent Mignonneau

    World famous media artists, creating mostly interactive computer installations. They are both teachers at the University of Art and Design in Linz, Austria, where they lead the Division of Culture at the Institute for the Media Interface. Their cooperation, which continues to this day, began in 1992 at the Institute for New Media in Staedelschule in Frankfurt.     Tanja Visosevic

    An interdisciplinary artist, screen critic/theorist and educator.  Her art projects employ the technologies and strategies of the moving image, performance and bio-art to explore the cultural and philosophical terrains that consume her.  Much of her obsessions deal with the Life and Death Instincts, Identity Politics and the pioneering possibilities, as well as side effects, spawned from New Technologies.   The formation of a revolutionary audiovisual culture via digital technologies is embodied by much of Visosevic’s creative undertakings, present in her interactive mobile phone performances (such as Oh Bon! Commissioned by Fremantle Arts Centre in 2008 for the Bon Scott Project), through to Bio-Kino’s The Living Screen project (researched and developed at SymbioticA – The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts).  These works possess an evolved poetics that situates her art practice within a swelling circuit of new genres and moving-image experiences.  Visosevic is a lecturer for the School of Communications and Arts at Edith Cowan University, where she combines her research in new media platforms with educating students in understanding the nature and experience of the moving image.

    Jon Wozencroft

    Founder of the audiovisual publishers Touch started in 1982 as a means of exploring the powerful chemistry between sound and visual media. The labels recent releases have included CDs by Fennesz, Biosphere, and Chris Watson amongst many others. He is the author of “The Graphic Language of Neville Brody 1 & 2”, published by Thames & Hudson in 1988 and 1994, and the curator of the exhibition of the same name, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1988 and ultimately at Parco in Tokyo in 1990. In 1990, he set up FUSE with Neville Brody, a critical forum for the impact of digital media on type and visual communication. Alongside Touch, Wozencroft’s photography and design work has appeared in a number of publications, including Fax Art, Sampler, G1, Merz to Emigre and Beyond and most recently Cover Art By. He was the publisher of Vagabond (magazine co–edited with Jon Savage, 1992), and the editor/designer of Joy Division’s “Heart and soul box set” in 1997, with whom he also worked on the 2007 CD reissues by Warner Bros. Wozencroft has taught at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design, The London College of Printing, and has given lectures at numerous art colleges and universities around the world. He is presently Senior Tutor in sound and moving image in the School of Communication at the Royal College of Art. His research project, Landscape and Perception, is a collaboration with Paul Devereux that investigates the soundscape of Preseli in SW Wales, source of the Stonehenge bluestones. www.touchmusic.org.uk

    Kacper Ziemianin

    Artist with classical musical education, who experienced numerous music adventures from black metal, through broken electronic music to ambient, noise and circuit bending. Sound travels led him to the Hague, where he is currently studying Sonology at a music conservatory. He graduated in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University in London. He also studied at the Music Academy in Cracow under the supervision of professor Marek Chołoniewski, in Berlin (UDK) under the supervision of dr. Alberto de Campo and in Amsterdam at STEIM. He also played in couple of bands and took part in several projects under various pseudonyms. He creates audio-visual installations, sound design for movies and was the author of the “Polish Deli” broadcast in London-based radio Resonance FM (2010-2013) where he promoted polish music and independent art. He performed and exhibited in Ireland, England, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland. In 2004 he received the “Dolina Kreatywna” award for his musical piece “Trans-formation”. Currently Ziemianin is busy building his own musical instruments and modifying already existing constructions, as well as interactive audio-visual installations. His “Around the Clock” installation, which he created in collaboration with the music gallery “Akusmata”, is an effect of a one-month residency in Helsinki at the “MUU association” ziemianin.net
