    9th August–4th October 2019 Openning: 9th August 2019, 6 pm ŁAŹNIA 2 Centre for Contemporary Art, Strajku Dokerów 5, Gdańsk - Nowy Port     Studiolo (from Italian) means a small studio, a study that serves for learning, experiments and research. It gained popularity in the era of the Renaissance, however, it derives from the Middle Ages, when it was termed to define the space for alchemical experiment. In this sense, the studiolo is the origin of a modern laboratory. During "Studiolo. Cosmic gardens" exhibition we will present contemporary studiolo, an experimental space for research and plant growth in an unusual conditions. Jaskolcza 1, Gdansk   Counted among the pioneers of interactive art, Masaki Fujihata is one of the most celebrated, innovative and prominent artists who work with media technologies. Early in his career in the 1970s, he made animations, initially using an 8mm film and the stop motion technique. Later, he shifted to video to further investigate visual perception. The morphological explorations of perception that he undertook then revealed his meta-artistic concerns, which have ever since continued to resurface in a variety of forms. Skończyłeś prawo w Tel Avivie, a działasz jako artysta w obszarze sztuk nowomedialnych. Jak zaczął się twój romans ze sztuką bio art i dlaczego właściwie bio–art? Jeszcze za czasów młodości miałem kolegę o imieniu Oron Catts, z którym często chodziliśmy po barach. Oron w pewnym momencie wyjechał do Australii, gdzie dostał się  do School of Design na Uniwersytecie Curtin  i zaczął tam swój słynny już projekt „Tissue Culture and Art Project”. Po roku wrócił do Izraela i niezwykle pasjonująco opowiadał o tym, jak bardzo urzekła go Australia i jak mocno zaangażowany jest w swoje działania. Zaraził mnie tym entuzjazmem na tyle, że zapragnąłem tam pojechać. Po skończeniu prawa wiedziałem, że szukam czegoś innego dla siebie, na początku zacząłem więc pracować z technologią, z cyfrowym systemem informacji, ale ten kierunek też do końca mnie nie satysfakcjonował. Spakowałem się więc i pojechałem do Australii na 6 miesięcy, zaraz jednak szybko znalazłem podyplomowe studia w programowaniu, które umożliwiły mi przedłużenie pobytu.     Jahannes Bergmark

    An improvising musician, experimental musical instrument maker and electroacoustic- and text-sound-composer. He has developed butoh, jester theatre and performance art into a kind of audiovisual object theatre, performed as a concert but with a setting as a surrealist puppet play of toys, tools, kitchen utensils, materials, weird and kitsch decorative things and junk found on streets and flea markets.     Oron Catts

    He is an artist, researcher and curator whose pioneering work with the Tissue Culture and Art Project which he established with Ionat Zurr in 1996 is considered a leading biological art project.   In 2000 he founded SymbioticA, an artistic research centre housed within the School of Anatomy, Physiology and Human Biology, The University of Western Australia. Under Oron’s leadership SymbioticA has gone on to win the Prix Ars Electronica Golden Nica in Hybrid Art (2007) and became a Centre for Excellence in 2008. Catts’ interest is life, more specifically the shifting relations and perceptions of life in the light of new knowledge and it application.   Often working in collaboration with other artists (mainly Ionat Zurr) and scientists, Catts have developed a body of work that speak volumes about the need to for new cultural articulation of evolving concepts of life. Oron was a Research Fellow in Harvard Medical School and a visiting Scholar at the Department of Art and Art History, Stanford University.   He is currently the Director of SymbioticA, a Visiting Professor of Design Interaction, Royal College of Arts, London, and a Visiting Researcher/consultant at Aalto University’s Future Art Base, Helsinki.     Marco Donnarumma

    New media and sonic artist, performer and teacher, Marco Donnarumma was born in Italy and is based in London.   Weaving a thread around biomedia research, musical and theatrical performance, participatory practices and subversive coding, Marco looks at the collision of critical creativity with humanized technologies. His biophysical system Xth Sense won the first prize in the Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition and was named the 2012 “world’s most innovative new musical instrument” by the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology, US.  Marco has performed and spoken in 40 countries including US and South America, Europe, India, China, South Korea and Australia. His works have been selected at leading art events (ISEA, Venice Biennale, WRO Biennale), specialized festivals (FILE, Sonorities, Némo, Mapping, Piksel, Re-New, Laboral, EMAF) and major academic conferences (NIME, ICMC, Pure Data Convention, Linux Audio Conference@Stanford CCRMA, SICMF). His projects have been reviewed on BBC, Reuters, Wired, Create Digital Music, We Make Money Not Art, Rhizome, Weave, El Pais, Digicult, and appeared in the book “New Art/Science Affinities” (CMU and Studio for Creative Enquiry, US). He was artist in residence at STEIM (NL), Inspace (UK), and the National School of Theatre and Contemporary Dance (DK). His work has been funded by the European Commission, British Council, Creative Scotland, New Media Scotland, and the Danish Arts Council.     Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     Monika Fleischmann & Strauss Wolfgang

    German artists and scientists, pioneers of interactive media art.   Since the very beginning of their artistic and scientific activity they have used computer both as a tool and medium. Their experimental research focuses on the interactivity in art and knowledge environment, as well as on the expanded and networked space used as interface. Learning new things from old things is one of the working methods applied to new media that they have invented for their use. Their ideas concerning visual presentation of information and computer-oriented models of navigation and dialogue have for twenty years now influenced the development of modern technoculture in the context of interactivity.   The work of Monika Fleischmann & Wolfgang Strauss has earned them a Golden Nica of Prix Ars Electronica and numerous other honorary awards, and is constantly archived by ZKM (Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie) in Karlsruhe.   Monika Fleischmann is a German media artist and scientist and Professor for Media Art and Theory of the University of Applied Sciences, Bremen. Since 1997 she has been Head of Media Arts & Research Studies, the MARS – Exploratory Media Lab at the Fraunhofer Institute IAIS. Her multifaceted education – digital media, visual arts, theatre play and fashion design – makes her an expert in media arts & technology, media art education, curating digital media (arts) and scenography. Her main research topic is to extend the concept of communication through interaction and participation on the base of perceptive processes. In 1999 she started – together with Giaco Schiesser and the Knowbotic Research group – a New Media Department at the University for Art & Design in Zürich.     Michał Górczyński

    graduate of the Fryderyk Chopin Academy of Music in Warsaw. Since 1998 he writes music for different instrument constellations (“Diversification” two fagots and a clarinet, “Rondo a la krakowiak” a screaming pianist and bass clarinet, “Painting” two clarinets, a fagot, a contrabass and singing) and theatres (about 25 performances for drama and puppet theatres). He used to perform as a soloist with groups like: de Ereprijs, Kwartet Śląski, „Aukso” Orchestra, Podlaska Filharmony. He creates installations, theoretical texts about his authorial concepts, radio auditions and underground movies.     Damien Hirst

    Was born in 1965 in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. In 1984 he moved to London, where he worked in construction before studying for a BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths college from 1986 to 1989. Whilst in his second year, he conceived and curated a group exhibition entitled Freeze. The show is commonly acknowledged to have been the launching point not only for Hirst, but for a generation of British artists. Since the late 1980s,Hirst has used a varied practice of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing to explore the complex relationships between art, life and death, explaining:  “Art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else… there isn’t anything else.” Through work that includes the iconic shark in formaldehyde, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991) and For the Love of God (2007), a platinum cast of skull set with 8,601 flawless pavé-set diamonds, he investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the uncertainties at the heart of human experience. Hirst lives and works in Gloucester, Devon and London.  Since 1987, over 80 solo Damien Hirst exhibition have taken place worldwide, and his work has been included in over 260 group shows.     Prof. dr hab. Ryszard W. Kluszczyński

    Professor at the University of Łódź and the Łódź Academy of Fine Arts, lecturer at the National Film School in Łódź. His field of interest includes first and foremost: video art, multimedia and avant-garde cinema, but he also explores the problems of cyber culture. In 1990-2001 he was the curator at Centre for Contemporary Art Ujazdowski Castle in Warsaw. Kluszczyński was the curator at the Modern Art Biennale in Poznań in 2010.     Gerard Lebik

    Gerard Lebik creates sound and music by means of improvisation, musical notation, and manipulation of audio material using acoustic and electronic media. His tools and techniques include: saxophones, contra-alto clarinet, acoustic wave generators, electro-acoustic objects, video feedback, and software.   In 2007, he graduated from the Wrocław Academy of Music.     An astronomer, with a speciality in space telescopes and observational cosmology.   He is currently a researcher at the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille, and Acting Director for the Observatoire Astronomique de Marseille Provence. His specialty is in space instrumentation; he was the principal investigator for the NASA Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer Satellite at the University of California, Berkeley.   For 25 years he has been the Editor of the Art-Science publication Leonardo at MIT Press and an Executive Editor of the Leonardo Book Series at MIT Press.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music.     Professor of Art and Technology at the University of Plymouth where he is the convenor of Transtechnology Research and the Editor-in-Chief of Leonardo Reviews.     Chris Salter

    Chris Salter (b.1967, Beaumont, TX) is an artist, Concordia University Research Chair in New Media and the Senses and Co-Director of the Hexagram Network in Montreal. He studied philosophy, theatre and computer music at Emory and Stanford Universities. After collaborating with Peter Sellars and William Forsythe/Ballett Frankfurt, he co-founded and directed the art and research collective Sponge (1997-2003). His solo and collaborative work has been seen all over the world at such venues as the Venice Architecture Biennale (Venice), Laboral Centro de Arte y Creacion Industriel (Gijon, Spain), Ars Electronica (Linz), Transmediale (Berlin), EXIT Festival (Maison des Arts, Creteil-Paris), Elektra (Montréal), Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco), V2 (Rotterdam), SIGGRAPH 2001 (New Orleans) and the Exploratorium (San Francisco), among others. He is the author of Entangled: Technology and the Transformation of Performance (MIT Press, 2010) and Alien Agency (MIT Press, 2015).

    Patrick Tresset

    A French artist and scientist who investigates human artistic activity, computational creativity and our relation to machines, in particular our relations with robotic entities. In the context of his art practice, Patrick uses robotics to create autonomous robotics entities that are evocative representations of the artist, and in a certain manner a representation of himself. His robots are based on advanced technologies using research findings from robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Patrick encountered and practiced computing, painting, drawing and sculpture from an early age in France. Following a degree in Business Computing, he migrated to London to become a painter. Between 1991 and 2003 his work was exhibited in solo and group shows in London and Paris. In 2003, Patrick lost his ability to paint and draw, he has since been working on computational and robotic systems that are able to simulate these artistic activities. Patrick’s research led him to join Goldsmiths, University of London, to study for a Master of Sciences in Arts Computing and until 2013, he codirected the AIkon II project with Prof. Frederic Fol Leymarie. The AIkon II project investigated the observational sketching activity through computational modeling and robotics. Patrick also created the creative robotics course taught to postgraduatestudents at Goldsmiths as part of the MFA Computational Arts programme. Patrick was recently a Senior fellow at the Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz in Germany and is a currently a visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London, United Kingdom. As a researcher he has published academic papers in the fields of artificial intelligence, computational aesthetics, computational creativity, social robotics, drawing research, digital arts and computer graphics.     Victoria Vesna

    A media artist and Professor at the UCLA Department of Design Media Arts and Director of the Art|Sci center at the School of the Arts and California Nanosystem Istitute (CNSI). She is currently a Visiting Proffesor nd Director of Reasearch at Parsons Art, Media + Technology, the New School for Design in New York and senior researcher at IMeRA - L’Institut Méditerranéen de Recherches Avancées in Marseille, France and Artist in Residece ant the Institute of Advanve Studies, Univesrity of Bristol. Her work can be defined as experimental creative research that resides between disciplines and technologies. With her instalation she explores how communication technologies affect collective behavior and how perception of Wales UK and has exhibite her work in over twenty solo exhibition, more than seventy group shows, her work is written about in many book chapters and her writings published in excess of twenty papers and gave 100+ invited talks in the last decade. Her most recent installlations – Blue Morph, Mood Swings and Waters Bowls, all aim to raise consciousness around the issues of our relationship to natural systems. other notable works are  Bodeies INCorporated, Datamining Bodies, nOtime oraz Cellular Trans_Action.     Kacper Ziemianin

    Artist with classical musical education, who experienced numerous music adventures from black metal, through broken electronic music to ambient, noise and circuit bending. Sound travels led him to the Hague, where he is currently studying Sonology at a music conservatory. He graduated in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University in London. He also studied at the Music Academy in Cracow under the supervision of professor Marek Chołoniewski, in Berlin (UDK) under the supervision of dr. Alberto de Campo and in Amsterdam at STEIM. He also played in couple of bands and took part in several projects under various pseudonyms. He creates audio-visual installations, sound design for movies and was the author of the “Polish Deli” broadcast in London-based radio Resonance FM (2010-2013) where he promoted polish music and independent art. He performed and exhibited in Ireland, England, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland. In 2004 he received the “Dolina Kreatywna” award for his musical piece “Trans-formation”. Currently Ziemianin is busy building his own musical instruments and modifying already existing constructions, as well as interactive audio-visual installations. His “Around the Clock” installation, which he created in collaboration with the music gallery “Akusmata”, is an effect of a one-month residency in Helsinki at the “MUU association” ziemianin.net
