Jaskolcza 1, Gdansk   Counted among the pioneers of interactive art, Masaki Fujihata is one of the most celebrated, innovative and prominent artists who work with media technologies. Early in his career in the 1970s, he made animations, initially using an 8mm film and the stop motion technique. Later, he shifted to video to further investigate visual perception. The morphological explorations of perception that he undertook then revealed his meta-artistic concerns, which have ever since continued to resurface in a variety of forms. The phenomenon of homeopathy is one of the most important in the history of medicine. The doctrine and the linked therapeutic practice were developed in the time of the crisis which European medicine suffered at the turn of the 18th and the 19th centuries. With only minor changes in the theory and with almost no adjustment of the treatment procedure, homeopathy survived for two centuries and enjoyed wide acceptance from the patients and simultaneously strong controversies among the physicians. The invariability of homeopathy during such a long period makes it one of the most fascinating phenomena in European medical culture. The processes that took place in the 19th and 20th centuries changed not only the medicine but also the medical culture of Europe. It is important to remember that the changes were very dynamic. As an example we may refer to changes in the ideals of medical sciences, in biomedical paradigms, and standards of scientific rationale that have been taking place in medicine for the last 200 years. On the other hand, the changes were visible in perception of illness and all related visions of the world and of human beings. The social concept of health and illness has been changing equally dynamically and it was not always in line with the academic vision. His research is focused on how developments in science and technology impact our culture and social life, our politics and the economy.   Bendyk heads the Center for Future Studies at the Collegium Civitias, he also writes a science column for the “Polityka” weekly.     Sound operator, specialized in the production of documentary movies. He is the co-author of documentaries, TV spots, music scores. He graduated at the Gdańsk University of Technology. For many years he worked at Video Studio Gdańsk – the first independent television production studio in Poland. He was also member of journeys to the Middle East.     Marco Donnarumma

    New media and sonic artist, performer and teacher, Marco Donnarumma was born in Italy and is based in London.   Weaving a thread around biomedia research, musical and theatrical performance, participatory practices and subversive coding, Marco looks at the collision of critical creativity with humanized technologies. His biophysical system Xth Sense won the first prize in the Margaret Guthman Musical Instrument Competition and was named the 2012 “world’s most innovative new musical instrument” by the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology, US.  Marco has performed and spoken in 40 countries including US and South America, Europe, India, China, South Korea and Australia. His works have been selected at leading art events (ISEA, Venice Biennale, WRO Biennale), specialized festivals (FILE, Sonorities, Némo, Mapping, Piksel, Re-New, Laboral, EMAF) and major academic conferences (NIME, ICMC, Pure Data Convention, Linux Audio Conference@Stanford CCRMA, SICMF). His projects have been reviewed on BBC, Reuters, Wired, Create Digital Music, We Make Money Not Art, Rhizome, Weave, El Pais, Digicult, and appeared in the book “New Art/Science Affinities” (CMU and Studio for Creative Enquiry, US). He was artist in residence at STEIM (NL), Inspace (UK), and the National School of Theatre and Contemporary Dance (DK). His work has been funded by the European Commission, British Council, Creative Scotland, New Media Scotland, and the Danish Arts Council.     Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     Masaki Fujihata

    Masaki Fujihata – is a pioneer in new media art, renowned in Japan as well as abroad. His CG work was much celebrated in the 1980s, before his interests shifted to creating 3D sculptures from data using 3D printing, as in his CNC-routed Geometric Love 1987, the stereo-lithography Forbidden Fruits 1989, and his small-scale sculptures using Micro Machine technology. In the mid-1990s, Fujihata produced canonical pieces of what would later be called “interactive art,” including the multimedia installation Beyond Pages 1995 and the exploration of networking technologies Global Interior Project 1995. His work problematizes everything from how we interact with interfaces to the ways we might communicate in virtual space. In particular, his experiments with GPS technology beginning in 1992 take a rather uncommon technical tack in gathering data, making for a meticulously composed and unparalleled series of cyberspatia creations that can only be called “the cinema of the future,” or “the shape of media to come.” His 2003 Field-Work@Alsace compiled interviews about international borders. The 2009 musical piece Simultaneous Echoes was created in Northern Ireland. Fujihata’s latest signature piece is the 2012 Voices of Aliveness, created in Nantes, France, assembling the shouts of cyclists in virtual space. Global Interior Project #2 won the 1996 Golden NIKA Award, Voices of Aliveness won an Ars Electronica Award of Distinction in 2013, and Simultaneous Echoes received the 2010 Ministry of Education Award for Fine Arts. His own archive from 1972 to 2016, Anarchive 6 Masaki Fujihata, uses Augmented Reality technology to combine digital data with printed materials, published in the anarchive series, Paris France in 2016.

    James K. Gimzewski

    A Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles; Director of the Nano & Pico Characterization Core Facility of California NanoSystems Institute; Scientific Director of the Art|Sci Center and Principal Investigator and Satellites Co-Director of the WPI Center for Materials NanoArchitectonics (MANA) in Japan. Pior to joining the UCLA faculty, he was a group leader at IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, where he research in nanoscale science and technology for more than 18 years.   Dr. Gimzewski pioneered research on mechanical and electrical contacts with single atoms and molecules using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and was one of the first persons to image molecules with STM. His accomplishments include the first STM-based fabrication of molecular superstructures at room temperature using mechanical forces to push molecules across surface, the discovery of single molecule rotors and the development of new micromechanical sensors based on nanotechnology which explore ultimate limits of sensitivity and measurement. This approach was recently used to convert biochemical recognition into Nanomechanics. His current interests are in the nanomechanics of cells and bacteria where he collaborates with UCLA Medical and dental Schools.   He is involved in projects that range from the operation of X-rays ions and nuclear fusion using pyroelectric crystals and single molecule DNA profiling.     Damien Hirst

    Was born in 1965 in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. In 1984 he moved to London, where he worked in construction before studying for a BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths college from 1986 to 1989. Whilst in his second year, he conceived and curated a group exhibition entitled Freeze. The show is commonly acknowledged to have been the launching point not only for Hirst, but for a generation of British artists. Since the late 1980s,Hirst has used a varied practice of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing to explore the complex relationships between art, life and death, explaining:  “Art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else… there isn’t anything else.” Through work that includes the iconic shark in formaldehyde, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991) and For the Love of God (2007), a platinum cast of skull set with 8,601 flawless pavé-set diamonds, he investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the uncertainties at the heart of human experience. Hirst lives and works in Gloucester, Devon and London.  Since 1987, over 80 solo Damien Hirst exhibition have taken place worldwide, and his work has been included in over 260 group shows.     James Auger (b. 1970, Derby) and Jimmy Loizeau (b. 1968, St. Asaph) – have been collaborating since 2001. They have taken part in exhibitions in the UK and abroad, including Don’t tempt me (ICA, London; MoMA, New York, 2001), Future products (London, 2002), Mobilise (Dublin, 2003), Open Borders (Lille, 2004), Betes de style (MUDAC, Lausanne, 2006), Philips Design exhibition (Eindhoven, 2007), Design and the Elastic Mind (MoMA, New York, 2008), What If (Dublin, 2009), Action!     A sociologist, producer, curator and music critic. He is a regular contributor to Polish Radio (Channel 2), the editor of a musical series at the słowo/obraz terytoria publishing house, co-producer of a CD series devoted to the Experimental Studio of the Polish Radio released by B.łt Rec, and co-producer of the Populista album series combining pop and conceptual art.   Libera is the cofounder of the 4.99 Foundation and the organizer of numerous concerts, workshops and rehearsals, including Playback-Play, plain. music, and The Song Is You.   He has published articles in Glissando, Res Publica, and Kultura Współczesna.   He regularly collaborates with the Zachęta National Gallery of Art, the Zamek Ujazdowski Center for Contemporary Art, and the Kr.likarnia Gallery of Sculpture.

    Dmitry::vtol:: Morozov

    (b. 1986, Moscow) – implements his ideas in technological art: robotics, sound art and science art. He is the first batch producer of music and video synthesizers in the post-Soviet area. Besides making music and instruments, Morozov creates art installations and promotes circuit-bending and DIY electronics through lectures and workshops.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music. Ignis released records by: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, Chaos As Shelter, EA and Spear.     A project created by a duo – Mateusz Wysocki (also known as Fischerle) and Lech Nienartowicz. They willingly explore all kinds of audio glitches, however, they like to focus also on the organic nature of sound and listeners perception, for example a cooperation with Justyna Kociszewska had brought to life “Fungus & Sequoia” – an audiovisual installation presented at the Reworks Festival in Greece.     Jasia Reichardt

    Writer on art, art critic and exhibition organizer. She was born in Poland but has lived in London most of her life. She was Assistant Director of the ICA in London (1963-71) and Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1974-76). She is principally interested in the relationships between art and science, art and technology and art and the history of ideas. Some of her best known exhibitions, such as “Between Poetry and Painting” (1965) and “Cybernetic Serendipity” (1968) were about the connections between one field and another. The principal idea of “Cybernetic Serendipity” exhibition was to examine the role of cybernetics in contemporary arts. She has written several books , including “The Computer in Art” (1971), “Robots – Fact, Fiction and Prediction” (1978) and edited “Cybernetics, Art and Ideas” (1971). She also worked on visualization of mathematics, a project called “Fantasia Mathematica”. She was one of the directors of ARTEC biennale in Japan (focused on art and technology) between 1989-98. In 1998 she staged an exhibition called “Electronically Yours” about electronic portraiture at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Since 1988 she has been looking after the Themerson Archive, the archive of a writer and an artist, whose avant-garde publishing company, Gaberbocchus Press, launched in 1957 a Common Room for artists interested in science and scientists interested in the arts. She continues to pursue her interests in the relationship of art and technology.

Wolfgang Strauss works in Fraunhofer IAIS in Sankt Augustin and since 2009 he teaches as a visiting professor at the Experimental Interaction in the HCI Master at the University of Siegen.Since 1987, he and Monika Fleischmann are working with the media art installations that connect with the concept of interactivity.     Patrick Tresset

    A French artist and scientist who investigates human artistic activity, computational creativity and our relation to machines, in particular our relations with robotic entities. In the context of his art practice, Patrick uses robotics to create autonomous robotics entities that are evocative representations of the artist, and in a certain manner a representation of himself. His robots are based on advanced technologies using research findings from robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Patrick encountered and practiced computing, painting, drawing and sculpture from an early age in France. Following a degree in Business Computing, he migrated to London to become a painter. Between 1991 and 2003 his work was exhibited in solo and group shows in London and Paris. In 2003, Patrick lost his ability to paint and draw, he has since been working on computational and robotic systems that are able to simulate these artistic activities. Patrick’s research led him to join Goldsmiths, University of London, to study for a Master of Sciences in Arts Computing and until 2013, he codirected the AIkon II project with Prof. Frederic Fol Leymarie. The AIkon II project investigated the observational sketching activity through computational modeling and robotics. Patrick also created the creative robotics course taught to postgraduatestudents at Goldsmiths as part of the MFA Computational Arts programme. Patrick was recently a Senior fellow at the Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz in Germany and is a currently a visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London, United Kingdom.     Christoph Veigl

    Austrian computer scientist and multimedia artist. He studied Sociology at the Vienna University and Medical Informatics at the Technical University Vienna. In his master thesis he developed the open source biosignal analysis software “BrainBay” which can be used for Biofeedback and alternative Human-Computer Interaction for people with disabilities. His artistic career started in 1992, when he co-founded the Syntharturalistic Art Association SHIFZ together with Magnus Wurzer. He created various biosignal-based interactive installations and machine art pieces. He travelled around Europe and the United States with contraptions like the “BrainWashing Machine” or “Alan the Telepresence Robot” and explored biofeedback and robotics for artistic purposes. In 1999, SHIFZ organized the first Roboexotica–Festival for Cocktail Robots, with its Annual Cocktail Robot Awards, which is said to be the leading festival for electronic cocktail culture since that time.     Jon Wozencroft

    Founder of the audiovisual publishers Touch started in 1982 as a means of exploring the powerful chemistry between sound and visual media. The labels recent releases have included CDs by Fennesz, Biosphere, and Chris Watson amongst many others. He is the author of “The Graphic Language of Neville Brody 1 & 2”, published by Thames & Hudson in 1988 and 1994, and the curator of the exhibition of the same name, held at the Victoria and Albert Museum in 1988 and ultimately at Parco in Tokyo in 1990. In 1990, he set up FUSE with Neville Brody, a critical forum for the impact of digital media on type and visual communication. Alongside Touch, Wozencroft’s photography and design work has appeared in a number of publications, including Fax Art, Sampler, G1, Merz to Emigre and Beyond and most recently Cover Art By. He was the publisher of Vagabond (magazine co–edited with Jon Savage, 1992), and the editor/designer of Joy Division’s “Heart and soul box set” in 1997, with whom he also worked on the 2007 CD reissues by Warner Bros. Wozencroft has taught at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art and Design, The London College of Printing, and has given lectures at numerous art colleges and universities around the world. He is presently Senior Tutor in sound and moving image in the School of Communication at the Royal College of Art.     Kacper Ziemianin

    Artist with classical musical education, who experienced numerous music adventures from black metal, through broken electronic music to ambient, noise and circuit bending. Sound travels led him to the Hague, where he is currently studying Sonology at a music conservatory. He graduated in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University in London. He also studied at the Music Academy in Cracow under the supervision of professor Marek Chołoniewski, in Berlin (UDK) under the supervision of dr. Alberto de Campo and in Amsterdam at STEIM. He also played in couple of bands and took part in several projects under various pseudonyms. He creates audio-visual installations, sound design for movies and was the author of the “Polish Deli” broadcast in London-based radio Resonance FM (2010-2013) where he promoted polish music and independent art. He performed and exhibited in Ireland, England, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland. In 2004 he received the “Dolina Kreatywna” award for his musical piece “Trans-formation”. Currently Ziemianin is busy building his own musical instruments and modifying already existing constructions, as well as interactive audio-visual installations. His “Around the Clock” installation, which he created in collaboration with the music gallery “Akusmata”, is an effect of a one-month residency in Helsinki at the “MUU association” ziemianin.net
