Jaskolcza 1, Gdansk   Counted among the pioneers of interactive art, Masaki Fujihata is one of the most celebrated, innovative and prominent artists who work with media technologies. Early in his career in the 1970s, he made animations, initially using an 8mm film and the stop motion technique. Later, he shifted to video to further investigate visual perception. The morphological explorations of perception that he undertook then revealed his meta-artistic concerns, which have ever since continued to resurface in a variety of forms. Victoria Vesna belongs to the elite, though dynamically growing, international milieu of artists who shape one of the most interesting and progressive trends in the contemporary art. Within this trend, connections between art and science are built and explored, which is of vital significance for the contemporary world. Works created in that space enter integral relationships with many fields of science, raising issues that have rarely been the core of artistic experiments so far.     Heather Dewey-Hagborg

    (b. 1982, Philadelphia) – is a transdisciplinary artist and educator who is interested in art as research and critical inquiry. Heather has shown work internationally at events and venues including the World Economic Forum, Ars Electronica festival in Linz, the Shenzhen Urbanism and Architecture Biennale, the Mediations Biennale in Poland, the Article Biennial in Norway, the Science Gallery Dublin, Transmediale in Berlin, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona, ZKM Museum of Contemporary Art in Germany, and Museum Boijmans, Van Abbemuseum, and MU Art Space in the Netherlands. She has exhibited nationally at PS1 MoMA, the New Museum, Eyebeam, the New York Public Library, and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, among many others. Her work has been widely discussed in the media, from the New York Times and the BBC to TED and Wired. She is an Assistant Professor of Art and Technology Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

    Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     James K. Gimzewski

    A Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles; Director of the Nano & Pico Characterization Core Facility of California NanoSystems Institute; Scientific Director of the Art|Sci Center and Principal Investigator and Satellites Co-Director of the WPI Center for Materials NanoArchitectonics (MANA) in Japan. Pior to joining the UCLA faculty, he was a group leader at IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, where he research in nanoscale science and technology for more than 18 years.   Dr. Gimzewski pioneered research on mechanical and electrical contacts with single atoms and molecules using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and was one of the first persons to image molecules with STM. His accomplishments include the first STM-based fabrication of molecular superstructures at room temperature using mechanical forces to push molecules across surface, the discovery of single molecule rotors and the development of new micromechanical sensors based on nanotechnology which explore ultimate limits of sensitivity and measurement. This approach was recently used to convert biochemical recognition into Nanomechanics. His current interests are in the nanomechanics of cells and bacteria where he collaborates with UCLA Medical and dental Schools.   He is involved in projects that range from the operation of X-rays ions and nuclear fusion using pyroelectric crystals and single molecule DNA profiling.     Damien Hirst

    Was born in 1965 in Bristol and grew up in Leeds. In 1984 he moved to London, where he worked in construction before studying for a BA in Fine Art at Goldsmiths college from 1986 to 1989. Whilst in his second year, he conceived and curated a group exhibition entitled Freeze. The show is commonly acknowledged to have been the launching point not only for Hirst, but for a generation of British artists. Since the late 1980s,Hirst has used a varied practice of installation, sculpture, painting and drawing to explore the complex relationships between art, life and death, explaining:  “Art’s about life and it can’t really be about anything else… there isn’t anything else.” Through work that includes the iconic shark in formaldehyde, The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living (1991) and For the Love of God (2007), a platinum cast of skull set with 8,601 flawless pavé-set diamonds, he investigates and challenges contemporary belief systems, and dissects the uncertainties at the heart of human experience. Hirst lives and works in Gloucester, Devon and London.  Since 1987, over 80 solo Damien Hirst exhibition have taken place worldwide, and his work has been included in over 260 group shows.     Konrad Korabiewski

    Experimental multimedia artist, currently residing in Iceland. As a sound artist, composer and media artist, Konrad Korabiewski has a minimalistic, yet detail-oriented unconventional and experimental artistic approach, characterized by a marked tendency to transgress various genres and media. Focused on absorption, substance and values rather than a certain media, he experiments and develops new possibilities for expressing philosophical views and artistic ideologies in sensing music and art. This is also highly visible at Korabiewski’s live performances, during which other actors and medias are involved to add layers and new dimensions to his music, sound and radio art pieces, installations and video-works. In 2011 Konrad Korabiewski won the international sound-art competition “Europe – A Sound Panorama” and recently got awarded the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des DAAD residency & working grant for 2014.     Gerard Lebik

    Gerard Lebik creates sound and music by means of improvisation, musical notation, and manipulation of audio material using acoustic and electronic media. His tools and techniques include: saxophones, contra-alto clarinet, acoustic wave generators, electro-acoustic objects, video feedback, and software.   In 2007, he graduated from the Wrocław Academy of Music.     Dmitry::vtol:: Morozov

    (b. 1986, Moscow) – implements his ideas in technological art: robotics, sound art and science art. He is the first batch producer of music and video synthesizers in the post-Soviet area. Besides making music and instruments, Morozov creates art installations and promotes circuit-bending and DIY electronics through lectures and workshops.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music. Ignis released records by: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, Chaos As Shelter, EA and Spear.     Jasia Reichardt

    Writer on art, art critic and exhibition organizer. She was born in Poland but has lived in London most of her life. She was Assistant Director of the ICA in London (1963-71) and Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1974-76). She is principally interested in the relationships between art and science, art and technology and art and the history of ideas. Some of her best known exhibitions, such as “Between Poetry and Painting” (1965) and “Cybernetic Serendipity” (1968) were about the connections between one field and another. The principal idea of “Cybernetic Serendipity” exhibition was to examine the role of cybernetics in contemporary arts. She has written several books , including “The Computer in Art” (1971), “Robots – Fact, Fiction and Prediction” (1978) and edited “Cybernetics, Art and Ideas” (1971). She also worked on visualization of mathematics, a project called “Fantasia Mathematica”. She was one of the directors of ARTEC biennale in Japan (focused on art and technology) between 1989-98. In 1998 she staged an exhibition called “Electronically Yours” about electronic portraiture at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Since 1988 she has been looking after the Themerson Archive, the archive of a writer and an artist, whose avant-garde publishing company, Gaberbocchus Press, launched in 1957 a Common Room for artists interested in science and scientists interested in the arts. She continues to pursue her interests in the relationship of art and technology.

    Stelarc

    Stelarc is an Australian performance and installation artist who has internationally exhibited, presented and done performances in Europe, Asia, North America, South America and Australia. He has visually probed and acoustically amplified his body. He has made three films of the inside of his body, filming 3m of the internal space of his lungs, stomach and colon. Between 1976-1988 he completed 25 body suspension performances with hooks in the skin. He has used medical instruments, prosthetics, robotics, Virtual Reality systems, the Internet and biotechnology to explore alternate, intimate and involuntary interfaces with the body.   He has performed with a Third Hand, a Virtual Arm, a Stomach Sculpture and Exoskeleton, a six-legged walking robot. His Prosthetic Head is an embodied conversational agent that speaks to the person who interrogates it. As part of the Thinking Head Systems he collaborated with the Marcs Auditory Labs at the University of Western Sydney to develop the Articulated Head, the Floating Head and the Swarming Heads projects. He is surgically constructing and stem cell growing an Ear on Arm that will be electronically augmented and internet enabled. The first surgical procedures occurred in 2006. He has recently been performing with his four avatar and automaton clones on his Second Life site, exploring actual-virtual interfaces and gesture actuation of his avatar with Kinect. His robots are based on advanced technologies using research findings from robotics, computer vision, artificial intelligence and cognitive computing. Patrick encountered and practiced computing, painting, drawing and sculpture from an early age in France. Following a degree in Business Computing, he migrated to London to become a painter. Between 1991 and 2003 his work was exhibited in solo and group shows in London and Paris. In 2003, Patrick lost his ability to paint and draw, he has since been working on computational and robotic systems that are able to simulate these artistic activities. Patrick’s research led him to join Goldsmiths, University of London, to study for a Master of Sciences in Arts Computing and until 2013, he codirected the AIkon II project with Prof. Frederic Fol Leymarie. The AIkon II project investigated the observational sketching activity through computational modeling and robotics. Patrick also created the creative robotics course taught to postgraduatestudents at Goldsmiths as part of the MFA Computational Arts programme. Patrick was recently a Senior fellow at the Zukunftskolleg, University of Konstanz in Germany and is a currently a visiting research fellow at Goldsmiths University of London, United Kingdom.     Victoria Vesna

    A media artist and Professor at the UCLA Department of Design Media Arts and Director of the Art|Sci center at the School of the Arts and California Nanosystem Istitute (CNSI). She is currently a Visiting Proffesor nd Director of Reasearch at Parsons Art, Media + Technology, the New School for Design in New York and senior researcher at IMeRA - L’Institut Méditerranéen de Recherches Avancées in Marseille, France and Artist in Residece ant the Institute of Advanve Studies, Univesrity of Bristol. Her work can be defined as experimental creative research that resides between disciplines and technologies. With her instalation she explores how communication technologies affect collective behavior and how perception of Wales UK and has exhibite her work in over twenty solo exhibition, more than seventy group shows, her work is written about in many book chapters and her writings published in excess of twenty papers and gave 100+ invited talks in the last decade. Her most recent installlations – Blue Morph, Mood Swings and Waters Bowls, all aim to raise consciousness around the issues of our relationship to natural systems. other notable works are  Bodeies INCorporated, Datamining Bodies, nOtime oraz Cellular Trans_Action.     Maciej Wojnicki

    A visual artist. She is graduate of the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow where she finished a PhD. She is also a junior lecturer at the Academy of Arts in Szczecin. She cooperates with the leading Polish modern art institutions: Zachęta Gallery, Museum of Art in Łódź, Wyspa Institute of Art and the Ujazdowski Castle. In 2007, she represented Poland at the European artists’ exhibition in Brussels. She has twice held a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture, and has won the Eugeniusz Geppert Award for her achievements in painting. In 2009 she was nominated to the Deutsche Bank Award for the best young artist, and was Artist of the Year of the Arteon art magazine in 2010. Her projects have been presented in Poland, Italy, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Turkey, Hungary and Canada.     Dr Ionat Zurr

    An artist and a researcher at SymbioticA – The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, School of Anatomy and Human Biology, the University of Western Australia. Ionat together with Oron Catts formed the internationally renowned Tissue Culture and Art Project. She has been an artist in residence in the School of Anatomy Physiology and Human Biology since 1996 and was central to the establishment of SymbioticA in 2000. Ionat is considered a pioneer in the field of biological arts and her research been published widely, exhibited internationally and her artwork has been collected by MoMA New York. Ionat is this year recipient of the Discovery Australian Reseach Council Award(2012); she has been a fellow in the InStem Institute, NCBS, Bangalore (2010) and a visiting scholar at The Experimental Art Centre, Stanford University (2007) and The Tissue Engineering & Organ Fabrication Laboratory, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School (2000-2001).
