Jaskółcza 1, Gdańsk   Both artists and scientists are exploring the brain, trying to create its images, sculptures and installations of it or – on the other hand – AI’s and neural networks. Specialization in the various fields of knowledge narrowed and scattered the scope of these researches, provoking discussion about the need to develop a platform that connects both artistic and scientific communities. More and more often we feel the need for consilience – united knowledge, whose various domains interpenetrate. Jaskolcza 1, Gdansk   Counted among the pioneers of interactive art, Masaki Fujihata is one of the most celebrated, innovative and prominent artists who work with media technologies. Early in his career in the 1970s, he made animations, initially using an 8mm film and the stop motion technique. Later, he shifted to video to further investigate visual perception. The morphological explorations of perception that he undertook then revealed his meta-artistic concerns, which have ever since continued to resurface in a variety of forms. The Body as Matter   How should an isolated organ be defined? What term do we use to describe the state of a beating heart that has just been removed from a body that is clinically dead?[1] What physiological mechanism causes the heart to beat outside of the body? Is it still alive or is it dead? Helen Pynor and Peta Clancy provoke such difficult questions in their recent joint project The Body Is a Big Place (2011).   The Nomadic Body               The central element in this work is a bio-sculpture installation involving the perfusion of fluid through two fresh pig hearts. The installation is re-created live during each exhibition, and thus every performance carries the risk of failure. During two tests and two public presentations, one in the Leonardo Electronic Almanac and the other at the Performance Space in Sydney, [TFA1] the ratio of successful attempts was 50/50. The pig hearts used are waste products from a nearby slaughterhouse; the fresh, though no longer beating hearts are hooked to a special apparatus, and a moment later, begin to beat once again, pumping a clear solution that flowed through them. She is Research Fellow with Transtechnology Research, University of Plymouth, and Associate Editor for Leonardo Reviews.     Pier Luigi Capucci

    (b. 1955, Lugo) – is a researcher and theorist in the fields of media studies and of the relationship among art, science and technology. He has published extensively in books and magazines, delivered numerous conference papers and he written the books Reality of the Virtual (1993), The Technological (1994) and Art and Technologies (1996). In 1994 he founded and directed the first Italian online magazine, NetMagazine, later MagNet, on the relationships between the arts and technologies. In 2000 he started Noema, a web magazine on culture-science- technology interrelations. He has participated in international conferences worldwide. He has worked as a teacher at the universities of Rome “La Sapienza”, Bologna, Florence and Urbino, at the SUPSI in Lugano, and at the fine arts academies of Carrara and NABA in Milan. He is currently a professor at the Fine Arts Academy of Urbino and the Director of Studies of the T-Node PhD Research Program of the Planetary Collegium, University of Plymouth (UK).

    Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     James K. Gimzewski

    A Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, Los Angeles; Director of the Nano & Pico Characterization Core Facility of California NanoSystems Institute; Scientific Director of the Art|Sci Center and Principal Investigator and Satellites Co-Director of the WPI Center for Materials NanoArchitectonics (MANA) in Japan. Pior to joining the UCLA faculty, he was a group leader at IBM Zurich Research Laboratory, where he research in nanoscale science and technology for more than 18 years.   Dr. Gimzewski pioneered research on mechanical and electrical contacts with single atoms and molecules using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and was one of the first persons to image molecules with STM. His accomplishments include the first STM-based fabrication of molecular superstructures at room temperature using mechanical forces to push molecules across surface, the discovery of single molecule rotors and the development of new micromechanical sensors based on nanotechnology which explore ultimate limits of sensitivity and measurement. This approach was recently used to convert biochemical recognition into Nanomechanics. His current interests are in the nanomechanics of cells and bacteria where he collaborates with UCLA Medical and dental Schools.   He is involved in projects that range from the operation of X-rays ions and nuclear fusion using pyroelectric crystals and single molecule DNA profiling.     Kirsten Hudson

    Dr Hudson is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University. Her research focuses on the philosophies and histories of the body, informed by gender studies, queer theory and French post-structuralism. This informs an art practice that critically resists and subverts normalising representations, constructions and perceptions of subjectivity, sociality and embodiment.     James Auger (b. 1970, Derby) and Jimmy Loizeau (b. 1968, St. Asaph) – have been collaborating since 2001. They have taken part in exhibitions in the UK and abroad, including Don’t tempt me (ICA, London; MoMA, New York, 2001), Future products (London, 2002), Mobilise (Dublin, 2003), Open Borders (Lille, 2004), Betes de style (MUDAC, Lausanne, 2006), Philips Design exhibition (Eindhoven, 2007), Design and the Elastic Mind (MoMA, New York, 2008), What If (Dublin, 2009), Action!     Micha Laury

    Born in Israel, a visual artist and sculptor living and working in Paris since 1974. Awarded the Sandberg Prize of the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (1980). Since the beginning of his artistic activity (1967) until today Laury is questioning the so called “brain”  through many of his works. His first brain piece titled “Floor Mop Brain” was done in 1969 with a floor mop arranged in the form of this organ.   Other works from the 70. and on, involved different media: Brain drawings, drawings for Brain projects, performances, photos, sculptures, installations etc. Laury's Brain drawing were mental drawings questioning the potential of human brain. The performances from 1975 examined the possibilities and limits of the brain. The photos of the performance “Cooking Art (Brains and Omlets)” from the same year was about the relation of food and mind (brain).   During the last years Laury met some brain scientists, they had a very interesting discussions about the current brain research. These exchanges with scientists helped artist to develope the concept of the installation “Brain (Laboratory)”. This complex installation includes neural network (with electric light), glass laboratory instruments, videos of laboratory experiments such as the “Eureka” phenomena.   “Eureka” is the rare moment when the brain “stumbles upon” an exceptional idea that sudenly comes into light after a long research period of no results. “Brain (Laboratory)” project will develop further in relation to the advancement of scientific research on the human brain

    Film editor. He graduated at the Film and Television Academy in Warsaw. After the graduation he started commercial work (Open Productions since 2006, lazniak.com since 2010).     Dmitry::vtol:: Morozov

    (b. 1986, Moscow) – implements his ideas in technological art: robotics, sound art and science art. He is the first batch producer of music and video synthesizers in the post-Soviet area. Besides making music and instruments, Morozov creates art installations and promotes circuit-bending and DIY electronics through lectures and workshops.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music. Ignis released records by: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, Chaos As Shelter, EA and Spear.     A project created by a duo – Mateusz Wysocki (also known as Fischerle) and Lech Nienartowicz. They willingly explore all kinds of audio glitches, however, they like to focus also on the organic nature of sound and listeners perception, for example a cooperation with Justyna Kociszewska had brought to life “Fungus & Sequoia” – an audiovisual installation presented at the Reworks Festival in Greece.     Jasia Reichardt

    Writer on art, art critic and exhibition organizer. She was born in Poland but has lived in London most of her life. She was Assistant Director of the ICA in London (1963-71) and Director of the Whitechapel Art Gallery (1974-76). She is principally interested in the relationships between art and science, art and technology and art and the history of ideas. Some of her best known exhibitions, such as “Between Poetry and Painting” (1965) and “Cybernetic Serendipity” (1968) were about the connections between one field and another. The principal idea of “Cybernetic Serendipity” exhibition was to examine the role of cybernetics in contemporary arts. She has written several books , including “The Computer in Art” (1971), “Robots – Fact, Fiction and Prediction” (1978) and edited “Cybernetics, Art and Ideas” (1971). She also worked on visualization of mathematics, a project called “Fantasia Mathematica”. She was one of the directors of ARTEC biennale in Japan (focused on art and technology) between 1989-98. In 1998 she staged an exhibition called “Electronically Yours” about electronic portraiture at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. Since 1988 she has been looking after the Themerson Archive, the archive of a writer and an artist, whose avant-garde publishing company, Gaberbocchus Press, launched in 1957 a Common Room for artists interested in science and scientists interested in the arts. She continues to pursue her interests in the relationship of art and technology.

    Christa Sommerer i Laurent Mignonneau

    World famous media artists, creating mostly interactive computer installations. They are both teachers at the University of Art and Design in Linz, Austria, where they lead the Division of Culture at the Institute for the Media Interface. Their cooperation, which continues to this day, began in 1992 at the Institute for New Media in Staedelschule in Frankfurt.     Bill Vorn

    Based in Montreal, Bill Vorn is active in the field of Robotic Art since 1992. His installation and performance projects involve robotics and motion control, sound, lighting, video and cybernetic processes. He pursues research and creation on Artificial Life and Agent Technologies through artistic work based on the Aesthetics of Artificial Behaviors. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Communication Studies from UQAM (Montreal) for his thesis on Artificial Life as a Media. He teaches Electronic Arts in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University (Intermedia/Cyberarts program) where he holds the rank of Full Professor.  His work has been presented in multiple international events, including Ars Electronica, ISEA, DEAF, Sonar, Art Futura, EMAF and Artec. He has been awarded the Vida 2.0 award (1999, Madrid), the Leprecon Award for Interactivity (1998, New York), the Prix Ars Electronica Distinction award (1996, Linz) and the International Digital Media Award (1996, Toronto). He has worked in collaboration with many canadian artists (including Edouard Lock, Robert Lepage, Gilles Maheu, LP Demers and Istvan Kantor).     Where Dogs Run

    Alexey Korzukhin (b.1974), Vladislav Bulatov (b.1975), Natalia Grekhova (b.1976), Olga Inozemtseva (b.1977). The group was formed in 2000 in Yekaterinburg (Russia). It represents a wide range of contemporary multimedia arts. In its artworks the group addresses spontaneous bodily experiences and mythological narrations, as well as optical and language illusions.     Kacper Ziemianin

    Artist with classical musical education, who experienced numerous music adventures from black metal, through broken electronic music to ambient, noise and circuit bending. Sound travels led him to the Hague, where he is currently studying Sonology at a music conservatory. He graduated in Sonic Arts at Middlesex University in London. He also studied at the Music Academy in Cracow under the supervision of professor Marek Chołoniewski, in Berlin (UDK) under the supervision of dr. Alberto de Campo and in Amsterdam at STEIM. He also played in couple of bands and took part in several projects under various pseudonyms. He creates audio-visual installations, sound design for movies and was the author of the “Polish Deli” broadcast in London-based radio Resonance FM (2010-2013) where he promoted polish music and independent art. He performed and exhibited in Ireland, England, Finland, Germany, Netherlands and Poland. In 2004 he received the “Dolina Kreatywna” award for his musical piece “Trans-formation”. Currently Ziemianin is busy building his own musical instruments and modifying already existing constructions, as well as interactive audio-visual installations. His “Around the Clock” installation, which he created in collaboration with the music gallery “Akusmata”, is an effect of a one-month residency in Helsinki at the “MUU association” ziemianin.net
