    9th August–4th October 2019 Openning: 9th August 2019, 6 pm ŁAŹNIA 2 Centre for Contemporary Art, Strajku Dokerów 5, Gdańsk - Nowy Port     Studiolo (from Italian) means a small studio, a study that serves for learning, experiments and research. It gained popularity in the era of the Renaissance, however, it derives from the Middle Ages, when it was termed to define the space for alchemical experiment. In this sense, the studiolo is the origin of a modern laboratory. During "Studiolo. Cosmic gardens" exhibition we will present contemporary studiolo, an experimental space for research and plant growth in an unusual conditions. How did Damien Hirst’s New Religion find its way to Gdańsk to become part of the Art+Science Meeting?This question is crucial to my understanding of the romance between art and science.For centuries, these phenomena have always come together, irrespective of the era.   Renaissance humanism formed the cornerstone of modern culture.The turn of the 19th and 20th centuries marked the rejection of academism in visual arts.This gave rise to the artistic fascination with revolutionary discoveries and scientific theories; artists began to delve into science, drawing on philosophy and psychology.They began to talk about extending the intellectual layer in art, while contestation and provocation became equally important to the artistic process as the ability to draw or paint.At the same time, there appeared voices highlighting the ever greater gap of understanding between humanists and scientists.Tumultuous political and social changes, together with unprecedented technological progress, created the conditions for socially engaged art.   Artistic protest turned into the leading canon throughout the entire 20th century.The intellectual and critical aspect of works dominated over aesthetics or skill.Damien Hirst also began his career by reaching for very strong means of expression.     Jahannes Bergmark

    An improvising musician, experimental musical instrument maker and electroacoustic- and text-sound-composer. He has developed butoh, jester theatre and performance art into a kind of audiovisual object theatre, performed as a concert but with a setting as a surrealist puppet play of toys, tools, kitchen utensils, materials, weird and kitsch decorative things and junk found on streets and flea markets. Head of Electroacoustic Music Studios at the Academy of Music in Krakow and Audiosphere Lab at Intermedia Department of Fine Arts Academy in Kraków. Founder and President of Muzyka Centrum Art Society and Polish Society for Electroacoustic Music PSeME. Since 2011 President of International Confederation of Electroacoustic Music CIME/ICEM. Director of Audio Art Festival in Krakow. Founder of many groups and ensembles, among others: Freight Train, ch&k&k, dizzy kinetics, GrupLab. Author of many projects, instrumental and electroacoustic music, sound and video installations, interactive, space/environment, audiovisual and net-art projects. He received Honorable Award of the Polish Composers Union, Award of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, as well as the Independent Project grant of the CEC ArtsLink in New York.

    Marco Donnarumma

    Marco Donnarumma is a media and performance artist, director, composer and scholar. Since the early 2000s, he has been interbreeding contemporary performance, media art and computer music to inquire into the recondite matters of the human body. He is widely known for his performances probing the body through sound physicality, technological engineering and movement research. He owns a Ph.D. from Goldsmiths, University of London and is one of the next Research Fellows at the Akademie­ für Theater ­und Digitalität, Dortmund. His performances and artworks toured over 60 countries and are regularly presented at leading art, theater and dance venues. His current research looks at the links between ritual performance, artificial intelligence and body politics through the lens of abjection, violence and intimacy.    In 2013, he took part in audiovisual interactive biophysical performances Bios @ Techne @ Art, which took place at the ŁAŹNIA Center for Contemporary Art.     Anders Eiebakke

    (born 1970 in Oslo, Norway) is an artist working with drone technology since 2007. Among his works is the seagull based MUAV, commissioned by The Norwegian Data Protection Authority. He has exhibited drone based works at among other the Manifesta Biennale (2010), Les Rencontres Internationales (2012) andVestfossen Kunstlaboratorium (2014). He designs his own aircrafts, exhibiting them together with politically charged aerial videos. Eiebakke also writes essays on drones, and is used as an analyst for Norwegian public radio and other news media. He is currently working on a group show in Kunstnernes Hus, Oslo, discussing the relationship between art and war.     Anna Friz

    Canadian sound and radio artist who specializes in multi-channel transmission systems for installation, performance, and broadcast, where radio is the source, subject and medium of the work. She also creates dynamic, atmospheric compositions for theatre, dance, film, and solo performance that are equally able to reflect upon public media culture or to reveal deeply expressive interior landscapes. She has performed and exhibited widely across North America, South America, and Europe, and her radio art/works have been heard on the airwaves of more than 20 countries.     Paul Granjon

    born in Lyon, France, in 1965, BA Fine-Art in Marseille (France) 1990. He teaches part-time in Cardiff School of Art and Design, Cardiff, UK. He directed several short films between 1990 and 1999, moved to the UK in 1995 where his focus gradually shifted to performance and robotics. Since 1999 he developed and showed internationally live performances and exhibitions with hand-made robots and songs as well as workshops, collaborations and other projects. He was awarded a Nesta (National endowment for science technology and the arts) Fellowship (2004-2007) and was one of the artists representing Wales in the Venice Biennale 2005, where he exhibited a Robotarium.     Kirsten Hudson

    Dr Hudson is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University. Her research focuses on the philosophies and histories of the body, informed by gender studies, queer theory and French post-structuralism. This informs an art practice that critically resists and subverts normalising representations, constructions and perceptions of subjectivity, sociality and embodiment. Her current research projects visually and textually explore: 1. the ethical and aesthetic consequences of stem cell technologies on understandings of life, death and personhood; 2, the potential of the art object to articulate ideas, feelings and experiences of melancholy, nostalgia, memory and mourning in a way that actively challenges the limits and understandings of loss and desire is a practicing artist, writer and academic based in Western Australia, where she is employed as a lecturer in the Schools of Design and Art and Media Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University.     Katarzyna Jankowska

    Graduated in painting at the Fine Arts Department at the Mikołaj Kopernik University in Toruń and finished the Museum Curator post graduate studies at the Jagiellonian University in Kraków.     Kristjan Loðmfjörð

    In the late nineties Kristján Loðmfjörð founded the film association Lortur along with film director Hafsteinn G. Sigurðsson. In the turn of the century Lortur became a populous group of young artists in Reykjavik, Iceland, producing experimental films as well as hosting the visual art biennale Drum Solo. After graduating from visual art in the year 2006 Kristján has worked as a visual artist, film director and editor. With the film medium Kristján explores the border between visual art and cinema, which allows him to emphasize the narration of visual language. Awards: Best documentary prize at the Edda Awards, the annual film and TV awards in Iceland, in 2007 for the film “Sins of the Fathers” (for script and editing), Third prize at the short film festival 2001 Frames in 2002 for the film “The Jacket Everybody Wanted to Wear”.     Karolina Żyniewicz

    Karolina Żyniewicz is an artist and a researcher. She earned her MA degree at the Faculty of Visual Arts, Strzemiński Academy of Art in Lodz (Poland), and is currently working on her PhD project under the Nature-Culture Programme of the Artes Liberales Faculty, University of Warsaw (Poland). While developing her artistic projects at biological laboratories, she also conducts ethnographic and autoethnographic observations, which help her explore the role of non-human actors, such as liminal beings, biofacts and transgenic organisms, in the production of contemporary culture. She shows her projects both at exhibitions (e.g. Pokusa nieśmiertelności/The Temptation of Immortality at the Copernicus Science Center in Warsaw; Uporczywe upodobanie/Pernicious Predilection at the Labyrinth Gallery in Lublin) and at conferences and festivals (e.g. Taboo, Transgresion, Transcendance in Art&Science [Greece, Mexico], FEMeeting [Portugal], and Foro de Estudias Visuales [Mexico]). As an important part of her practices, she writes texts showcasing the performative process of art&science project development (e.g. “Art&science: Autoetnografia artystki realizującej projekty w laboratoriach biologicznych” in Kultura i społeczeństwo; “Ciało w świecie post-natury – byty liminalne. Projekt safe suicide” in Cięcie ciał-ruchome obrazy). In her work, she emphasises the epistemic and didactic dimensions of art. In 2016-2018, she collaborated with the education sections of  the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw and the Zachęta National Gallery of Art in Warsaw.     Film editor. He graduated at the Film and Television Academy in Warsaw. After the graduation he started commercial work (Open Productions since 2006, lazniak.com since 2010).     Dmitry::vtol:: Morozov

    (b. 1986, Moscow) – implements his ideas in technological art: robotics, sound art and science art. He is the first batch producer of music and video synthesizers in the post-Soviet area.     Maciej Ożóg

    Sound artist, culture and media theorist. Since the early nineties he’s been involved in experimental music scene of Poland. Founder of many bands (Spear, Ben Zen, Aural Treat, Sub Spa, Quantum Vacuum Oscillator, Nonstate i.a.). He works in the field of live multimedia performance, interactive installations and video art. In his solo performances he critically explores the limial territory between body physical activity and invisible electric infrastructure of hybrid space. He uses custom designed instruments and devices as well as digital and analogue electronics. Ożóg is an author of numerous articles concerning aesthetics of new media art, critical art, avant-garde film, video, and experimental music. His research focuses on surveillance studies, information and network society, tactical media, bio art and posthumanism. He teaches at the Department of Electronic Media, University of Łódź, Poland. In 1998-2002 he ran a record label Ignis Project dedicated to electronic and electroacoustic music. Ignis released records by: Francisco Lopez, Ultra Milkmaids, Vance Orchestra, Indra Karmuka, Crawl Unit, Origami Arktika, Chaos As Shelter, EA and Spear.     A project created by a duo – Mateusz Wysocki (also known as Fischerle) and Lech Nienartowicz.     Michal Rataj

    Czech sound artist, musician. He studied musicology at the Charles University in Prague and composition at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, where he earned his Ph.D. in 2005. Since 2006 he is assistant professor and runs electroacoustic music theory and composition classes.     Chris Salter

    Chris Salter (b.1967, Beaumont, TX) is an artist, Concordia University Research Chair in New Media and the Senses and Co-Director of the Hexagram Network in Montreal. He studied philosophy, theatre and computer music at Emory and Stanford Universities. After collaborating with Peter Sellars and William Forsythe/Ballett Frankfurt, he co-founded and directed the art and research collective Sponge (1997-2003).     Bill Vorn

    Based in Montreal, Bill Vorn is active in the field of Robotic Art since 1992. His installation and performance projects involve robotics and motion control, sound, lighting, video and cybernetic processes. He pursues research and creation on Artificial Life and Agent Technologies through artistic work based on the Aesthetics of Artificial Behaviors. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Communication Studies from UQAM (Montreal) for his thesis on Artificial Life as a Media. He teaches Electronic Arts in the Department of Studio Arts at Concordia University (Intermedia/Cyberarts program) where he holds the rank of Full Professor.  His work has been presented in multiple international events, including Ars Electronica, ISEA, DEAF, Sonar, Art Futura, EMAF and Artec. He has been awarded the Vida 2.0 award (1999, Madrid), the Leprecon Award for Interactivity (1998, New York), the Prix Ars Electronica Distinction award (1996, Linz) and the International Digital Media Award (1996, Toronto). He has worked in collaboration with many canadian artists (including Edouard Lock, Robert Lepage, Gilles Maheu, LP Demers and Istvan Kantor).     Dr Ionat Zurr

    An artist and a researcher at SymbioticA – The Centre of Excellence in Biological Arts, School of Anatomy and Human Biology, the University of Western Australia. Ionat together with Oron Catts formed the internationally renowned Tissue Culture and Art Project. She has been an artist in residence in the School of Anatomy Physiology and Human Biology since 1996 and was central to the establishment of SymbioticA in 2000. Ionat is considered a pioneer in the field of biological arts and her research been published widely, exhibited internationally and her artwork has been collected by MoMA New York. Ionat is this year recipient of the Discovery Australian Reseach Council Award(2012); she has been a fellow in the InStem Institute, NCBS, Bangalore (2010) and a visiting scholar at The Experimental Art Centre, Stanford University (2007) and The Tissue Engineering & Organ Fabrication Laboratory, Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School (2000-2001).
